Dingus, I'm not on your side on this one.

Sometimes extreme measures are called for in defense of the land (and the creatures and the plants). Lord know that the real bad guys - Bush and his ilk - use their own extreme measures.

Nothing has ever been successfully defended by isolation from its proper owners and caretakers. Isolation=ignorance (out of sight, out of mind) which eventually allows affluent people/groups with private agendas (land developers/"eco tourism entrepreneurs") to use inside channels to the BLM/NPS/NFS to cut their own deals- out of sight and off the record.

Just because it's public land does not give every member of the public the right to do what they will with the land.

Then why, pray tell, are they still designated as "Public"? If these folks want to buy up the land and keep me out, then let them pay for administration and let it be called a Private Preserve.... Oh, but wait, that puts it in a different tax column and doesn't look nearly as good in the PR campaigns, does it?

In fact, I've often wondered how it can be that climbers feel like they own the cliffs, they can bolt them all to hell and smear chalk all over them like so much graffiti. Just because they're CLIMBERS, man, they're cool.

Yes, there are bad climbers.... but I challenge you to name any other sport/recreational pursuit whose members give more (or even as much) to the preservation and awareness of our precious National Forests and Parks.... You only make yourself look ignorant by demonizing all climbers as carefree, impact-oblivious nimrods on an ego trip. It is these same CLIMBERS who organize and carry out chalk and trash clean up days, trailwork get-togethers, and Private purchases of endangered climbing resources. It is these same CLIMBERS who (for the most part) abide by voluntary closures and bolting moritoriums for the sake of endangered species breeding and Native American religious rites.

Don't know about climbing making you cool (sounds more like the whine of someone who started climbing to get laid and it didn't work out, to me), but I do think that this kind of community involvement and activism, without some control-freek's need to deny all access, is pretty cool...

Anyway, in preserving the whole of the heritage of the Earth for future generations, sometimes people have to be shut out. Because if they're not, parts of the heritage will be lost forever.
