Oh boy...my 15 year old daughter just asked me if she could dread her hair. My beautiful daughter with angel hair...

I guess I have to walk the talk...

Well, at least she's not asking you if she can dye her hair pink.

I'd love to have dreads. I would definetly pay to have them done professionally though. Now is the time to do it, while I'm in school only work party time jobs anyways. I think it would be hard to commit to dreads though- I can't even wear a piece of jewelry for more than a couple days. And at one point I had a nose piercing, but I couldn't stand having a piece of metal stuck in my nostril.

You should totally get dreads!! I'm sure that you'd get used to the 'commitment' pretty quick! I'm hoping to get mine before the end of October. (Keep your fingers crossed!!)

And Daisy, we could post pics together!!! Hahahaha, jk! :D

i guess i'm a bit older than most of you posting about getting dreads while you're in high school. i'm out in the real world now, and if i ever take time away from work (a year off or so) i think i'll dread it... i have really curly hair so it tends to dread itself...

I once had pink hair. You can take my parents tactic...let me wear whatever I want, hang out with whomever I wanted, as long as I brought home straight A's in all honors/AP classes. One B and pink hair had to go. Worked on me.

Dreadlocks look very sweet....I just never had the nerve to do it as I would "dread" the thought of having to chop off my hair to get rid of them if I decided they weren't for me at some point! I did have braids lots though.....the last time was ages ago, and it took like almost 3 days for the woman to finish them, they were so tiny. Looked really good. Problem though when after a week I decided that I would like to have bangs and went to unbraid a few and found that she had used some type of waxy stuff (meant especially for dreadlocks I later found out)......can we say fun when it came time to try and pick the hair apart! Luckily it was more hair extensions than real hair. I would also recommend to anyone who was ever thinking of doing something like this to be careful of how much extensions you would add in to your real hair.....as this woman added so much that my hair felt like it weighed a ton, and it broke a lot of hair off in pieces. Unfortunately, caucasian hair tends to not stay looking as nice in the tiny braids without the extensions, and tends to not stay as nice and tight in the braids as some ethnic hair which always looks really good this way. Cheers!

Whoa......that must have been alot of braids!! When I went to Mexico, I got my hair braided, but it must have only been 40 or so, because it only took the lady about an hour!! But, I know that braiding hair was a big part of her income, so she had to be good at it! I watched a bit in the mirror...her hands were moving so fast that they were just a blur. I left them in for about 3 weeks, but, as you said, they started to get fuzzy and stuff after about 2. It was cool to have them though, listening to your hair clink together as the beads hit each other.

I'm gettin my money together....I'm almost there... :D

My goal is to have dreads by the end of the month.

Hopefully!

dreadlocks carry a pretty strong image in looks and outlook of the wearer. I think dreads are cool b/c I associate them so much with Bob Marley (music and aura).

once my partner and I met a young climbing AZ hippy couple. the girl had blonde dreads and I distinctly remember her hair and very mellow attitude.

bump...

i've been wanting dreads for awhile. i'm graduating from college in may, going into architecture... not sure if they like "that look" or not, or if i'd have to dress nicer to make up for eccentric hair. i've done eccentric before but that mainly consisted of wearing it a couple inches long and spiked like a boy for an entire school year. it looked good.

maybe i'll try the temporary deal. scare the crap out of my boyfriend, that's for sure.

Sorry for taking so long to reply!

Yes, I did get them, and I think they look great!! Everyone has come up to me saying how good they look! I know that some people are against this and stuff, but I would really recommend getting them done professionally, unless you know someone who has experience doin 'em. They look so good right from the start, not like crap. hehe. It took 3 1/2 hours, and I won't like to you guys.......... it hurt!! They pull so hard to do the backcombing, (of course it would probably be a bit different at every salon.) At first it didn't hurt, but after 2 hours of pulling on every little part of your head, it starts to sting a bit, let me tell ya! You've reeaaaaally gotta want 'em! But anyways, enough about the pain. So far having them has been very different, in an awesome way. You get a lot more attention, (can be a bit weird, hehe) But since I've got them, every day at least 2 random people come up to me who I have noooo idea who they are, and they compliment my hair. You get A LOT of second glances, haha, from anyone. They're not used to people having dreads.

I say go for it if you really want them... for anyone.

But, just a warning, you lose a lot of length. Before I got them, my hair was about 6 or 7 inches past my shoulders....and afterwards only the back ones go past my shoulders. The front ones look like long bangs though, they're about chin length, looks pretty cool I think.

I'll post a pic when I figure it out!

L8er! :D

I would think they'd be rather uncomfy to sleep on. I sometimes fantasize about making mad passionate love to a beautiful dread locked mocha man. However, I think men fantasize about swimming through soft hair. Plus, I have heard of them just breaking off! Yikes!! Be happy with yourself, dreads or no dread. Smiles, g

i'll just add that you want to put some thought into whether or not you want dreads if you travel a lot, especially to strange places. they will not go over well in a lot of conservative places. there is no way i could do my job if i have dreads, though thankfully i am past the wierd hair stage of my life.

if you like them and don't have a good reason for not having them, good for you for trying something different.

I've bin climbing for quite a while now, and I had dreads for approximately a week before I had to chop them. Unfortunately (being in Africa may have something to do with this) I just used to get really hot and bothered with them when I was climbing! Dreads are great fun, they look awesome etc but an a practical note, if you are going to get them and you want to avoid a seriously itchy neck and scalp then make them as thin as possible!! I underestimated the feeling of being able to run my fingers through my hair. However it did mean that when I shaved them off I had a super-smooth head which made me feel like STRONG! weird what hair can do inside your head huh?

I approved your photo and I think they look great. Very neat, non-matty dreads. Makes me wonder what I would look like, but then I would no longer be a yuppie and that would be like . . . like denying me air. :) Khakis and dreds do NOT match.

I have beautiful locks (people tell me that everyday). I have had them for five years ( I locked my hair when I got pregnant so they are the same age as my daughter.) I have successfully made it through college and had multiple job offers with lock. I accepted an accounting position with a firm in Atlanta. If you have any Qs let me know...

Personally I do not find them attractive and therefore don't really care for them. But if you want them then go fer it, screw what anyone thinks. Here in Missoula we tend to be swamped with dreads. (mainly during the semester) so having seen a number of people with them, interacting with said people, and being disgusted with their apathy over most things I have built a sterotype. All in all..dreads do not make the person.
