And since we're on the subject, a couple of ski racer's (aka slat rats) favorite rider's jokes:

(Q) What's the difference between a vacuum cleaner and a snowboard? (A) How the dirtbag is attached.

(Q) How do snowboarders great each other? (A) Sorry, dude.

Q. How many skiers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. Ten, one to screw it in and the other 9 to stand around saying "Ohhh…nice turn, nice turn, nice turn.... "

Q. How many Masters Ski Racers does it take to change a light bulb?
A. Only one - he holds it while the mountain revolves around him

In reply to:
hmm, so i probably shouldnt ask any of you to take me snowboarding, huh?

Amber- Come with us to Telluride on Monday (post OIF); I'd be happy to take you out for a little riding...

Flamer- You gonna snowboard on that Monday???

Nope! I don't Ride much anymore. $ times a year is about it for me, I'd rather climb these days.

I think all these skier folks are still pissed because we saved their Ski resort's in the 90's.
Did anybody else notice that the "latest thing" on Ski's is to do SNOWBOARD TRICKS???
Well except for the old farts who still think bashing gates is cool...and then there's the ones who think TRAINING to bash gates is cool.

Now Tele there's something practical that I can respect!! I need to pick that up so I can travel more efficiently in the baskcountry, snowshoes be damned!!

that sounds like this blissed-out hippie-chick i once dated. her name was autumn rainbow -- it said so on her license -- and she claimed to have been conceived at woodstock.

anyway, autumn was a really cool chick. she worked part-time as a decorative icer in an erotic bakery and was a founding member of the local strip pictionary league.

alas, she would bathe but twice a week, prefering to go au natural save for the slightest hint of patchouli.

the lithesome ms rainbow was a sworn vegetarian (not so much for the love of animals as for the hatred of plants) and was rail thin. to say she was lean is to say elizabeth taylor enjoys the ocassional bite of wedding cake. no, this girl was all knees and elbows, and i liken making love to her to falling into a dumpster full of baseball bats and end tables

where was ... oh, yeah ... "under the soap". sorry ... must have been an acid flashback.

True. But the best skiers are beginning to do even sicker tricks than boarders.

In reply to:
Well except for the old farts who still think bashing gates is cool...and then there's the ones who think TRAINING to bash gates is cool.
In its own warped way, bashing gates (whether while training or in a race) can be pretty cool. But nothing is so cool as bashing snowboarders.

And if we really want to think cool, think of some of ski images on TV and Sports Illustrated:
1) Austria's Herman "The Herminator" Meier in his amazing upside-down airborne fall in the last Olympic's downhill. He came back a few days later to win the super G.
2) The Herminator was in a serious motorcycle/car accident less than two years ago in which he almost lost both of his legs. Last weekend he won the World Cup downhill and took second in the super G at Colorado's own Beaver Creek.
3) America's Bode Miller, whose wild recovery in the Olympic's downhill would have blown the ACLs of mere mortals.
4) America's Erik Schlopy, whose recent fall was given a 2-page spread in SI -- airborne and in mid-fall you can see one ski sheared off clean at the toe piece and shattered at the tail.

And how about boarders who are now running races in speed suits with gates. Think about the Olympic gold medal winner who tested positive for THC. The response -- I didn't smoke; I was just breathing the air in a room where other dudes were lighting up.

Riiiiiiight!

Luckily, this slat rat has a dictionary to look up acculturated. Sheesh, Amber, Denver's thin air makes it a challenge to think of such big words.

Ski racing rules require the racer to weave a line back and forth across a hill, with the path marked by plastic or bamboo poles (aka "gates"). In most race courses, the fastest path will require the skier to be as close to the gates as possible. The skier's feet must be outside of the path marked by the gates, but due to centrifugal force the skier's body often hits the gates. Thus, gate bashing.

Oh yeah, and it can hurt big time -- even with foam padding and plastic armor.

Consider yourself erudite in skiing trivia.

OK, so I have had a few pints of OB Gordon's tonight, while watching the Indiana basketball game, but it's a good thing I read this twice. I could have SWORE that I saw "You people know how to build excrement..."

In reply to:

Having been strapped to a pair (that's right... TWO) planks since I was in grade school, I can assure you that we skiiers were pulling 720's, backsides, fakies, and a host of other "snowboard" tricks well before snowboards were ever invented. It's a cycle, and it's only now coming full-circle.

Besides... it's called aSki Area for a reason.

"...dry tooling the inside of the condo..."

...been thinking about that...the key's going to be whether they used metal plates under the mud to shape the sheetrock corners between the bay windows...not much room on either side if they did...I think tools can be accurately placed but I'm guessing that monopoints will have better success unless they use soft pine for the casing trim...

geez, jeff, you've obviously not had much experience with this activity. [i:e1fd63ff4c]first [/i:e1fd63ff4c]off, what you do is eschew vertical frontpoints for horizontal ones; same as climbing steep snow. [i:e1fd63ff4c]then[/i:e1fd63ff4c] you rig yer tools with two adzes and use [i:e1fd63ff4c]them[/i:e1fd63ff4c] instead of the less effective picks.

i'm working on an ice-screw/molly-bolt hybrid for drywall protection, but i'm not prepared to discuss it on an open forum at this time (patent thieves, you know).

now quit beeing such a n00b!

Damn strait dude, glad to see you've been enlightened.

But Geo and Jeff, guys, I will show you how the drywall climbing goes when I get there. This is the only type of climbing I have done for a year or so. Watch and learn...

Geo, eyeballing the distance from trim into the corner and over to trim on the opposite face, I'm guessing three inches per side. The steel corner beads will take up half that, leaving only 1.5 inches for placements....unless you stick your points hard enough to penetrate thin sheet steel. It's good that there's two routes side by side on that two story bay, you and Elvis can settle once and for all who's the king. Looks like speed, accuracy in placement, and raw power will win the day.

Elvis, Geo seems to think he'll be up, down, and finishing a second shot of single malt before you get halfway up. How do you feel about that?

Martha, no worries, I'm not instigating anything, just bummed at how many obstacles stand between me and getting there for this one. Sending out 20 resumes a day, getting maybe two notices of receipt a week, addressed "Dear Applicant", the computer biz in this town is still very soft.

I'm probably going to have to do some construction work for a bit until the market improves. Getting time off then becomes a maybe. Even if I do, I'd have to choose between flying into Durango and driving the stacked switchbacks below Red Mountain Pass or riding some wind-up toy into Montrose with an easier drive.

I'm not signed up for any clinics, and may end up stealth camping up near Camp Bird, and you know the temps will drop to minus 20 if that happens. But damn the torpedos, if I can make it happen it'll happen.

Sandbag, time Geo and Elvis get done, toothpaste isn't going to get it. Float some newspaper over the larger craters, anchored around the edges with smaller dabs of Crest, and the paint will stiffen it long enough for you all to get the hell out of Dodge.

By the way, the narrow seam between the windows seems like it could lead to barndoor swings to one side or the other. If someone needs to flag to maintain balance, is the glass on or off?

I'm not familiar with this route, but you may wish to consider pro prior to the competition. I'd hate to see anyone injured prior to the ice climbing.

Recent mixed climbing trends are to use more rock pro than screws. My questions are:
1) Will screws work OK in the drywall and/or trim, and if so, what length is recommended?
2) Are there any good seams that will take pins?
3) Are the walls pretty blank? If the line may be deemed a future classic, I'd consider slamming in a few bolts. I doubt skibby will mind.
