what the heck is a JBOD?
edit: nevermind. haha, good name. Well, SCSI can be RAID'ed, and I was under the impression that SCSI drives are pretty damn fast.

In reply to: That's more up to the photographer than the viewer... some folks don't necessarily want to give away their masterpieces. As a pay-to-play type of thing, though, if the market's there we will be more than happy to string together a bunch of JBODs. |

They are. We have 5 of them madly spinning at around 15,000 RPM just to keep up with all our users ;-). 2 are mirrored, the other 3 are RAID5'ed. (Don't ask, it's not worth it...)
By the way, nice choice of residences. I almost ended up living in Vancouver. Great town.

It's all good. I actually did understood all the different RAID levels at one point in time... Now the whole mirror stripping parity thing just confuses me.. :?
Yeah, Vancouver's a great city :) Too bad I don't get to spend as much time as I wanted there since college started. Btw in your name, BOFH = bunch of...?

Do you think with current server load we have the processing power to resize on the fly?
If that would be too much .. maybe create medium size (that most people want to view) .. if someone is on dialup they can set a cookie to view photos as small which get created on the fly .. or if someone wants a larger version .. it would also be created on the fly .. thus not wasting space by storing 4 different versions of each photo (original, large, medium, small), just 2 (Original, Medium)

I have no idea what the operating costs are of this site, but disk space is extremely cheap.

No way, IMO. The disk space is cheaper (ie more available) than processing power. I'd think we'd definitely have to cache the re-sized versions. Good idea though.
