[quote="jt512"]In reply to: In reply to: I finally found the article about the impending Suicide closure. Here it is in its entirety: -- Care to cite a Source? The source is a very humorous climber with a vivid imagination. While anything is possible under the current administration, at present the sale of Suicide Rock to a private enterprise for mining purposes is ridiculous....call the Forest Sevice Idylwild office (909) 382 2922 for another chuckle.

Don't buy a 50m rope. Most of the newer areas around LA are being set-up for 60m, at least, and an area I was at last weekend has some routes you need a 70m to avoid rapping.

Here's my question if this Suicide closure/mining story is legit: Where was the Access Fund in all of this? I just can't imagine them not coming to the rescue of that sweet piece of stone if it was up for sale to a mining company. Not to mention the blasting operations up there would be pretty loud, I can't imagine the Idyllwild residents adjacent to Suicide would be too happy about that. And if it really was sold, how much did it sell for? I dunno....I can't believe that entire rock would be sold and closed without a HUGE uproar in the climbing community here.

Well, Jay (jt512) started it which is why I actually thought it might be true, cause he wouldn't joke about stuff like that. Maybe he knows the original source.

Actually, Suicide is in a wilderness area it is off limits to commercial development and exploitation - of this type. Robbins Mining says that the reporter made a mistake that they were buying Suicide. Robbins did work out a deal with the Forest Service and they will be blasting Tahquitz to make their granite counter tops, flooring and stone facades for corporate offices of oil companies with ties to Vice President Dick Cheney. Robbins is thrilled about this switch because the access to Suicide was murder anyhow. They will be building an access road in from Humber Park that will continue around the base of Tahquitz and out on the roads of South Ridge. The mayor of Idylwild and director of the local forest service office were paid a handsome fee for this idea (intellectual property). Climbers will have to cease use of Thaquitz by July 25, 2004. Robbins is dubbing this date Christmas in July for his company. He has given a warning to climbers however. Do not chisel off or remove any granite from Thaquitz. It is now the property of Robbins and climbers taking chunks of it home for souvineers will be prosecuted to the full extent for theft. 8)

Back to your original post after an extended detour! A 50 M will be great for all but a handfull of So Cal routes and is considered the standard length nowdays. You don't need anything longer for any of the 6000 or so routes at J Tree, 500 or so at Tahquitz / Suicide, or any of the Needles (S. Sierra) routes. mostly of those routes were established with 165 ft (45M) or shorter ropes. Your 30M will get you in trouble though.

"Furthermore," he added, "those climbers who were still coming through were usually neglecting to purchase an Adventure Pass, and that really hurt operations." Right! You don't need a FAP to park at Suicide. I'll bet some people on this site could be sold just about any bill of goods!

All these replys and no mention of Williamson rock. Great sport climbing, even a few multi-pitch climbs. All ranges from Easy slab to drastically overhung. Bomber rock, the guide book calls it "featured granite". There is at least a couple of weeks worth of climbing, but camping can be an issue, as it is located on national forest land. I highly recomend this area. There is a fairly comprehensive guide book available.

Bomber rock, the guide book calls it "featured granite". .... Bomber rock? Guess you haven't heard, but with the recent freeze-thaw cycle a huge section of the London Wall fell off. From what I was told, the stream along the base is covered by about 5 or 6 feet jagged blocks, granite dust everywhere. Good thing nobody was there when it happened.

On behalf of the entire Homicide of Suicide conspiracy, I thank you.
In reply to: you didnt get me but i did see the hook set on a few! Indeed. Apparently, at least one reader called the Forest Service to verify the story. I think inducing a reader to call a government agency puts the Troll rating into the double digits. It was also privately related to me that a reader called the Access Fund to inform them of the "crisis." Better yet, the caller said that the Access Fund person he spoke with said that they were "already aware of the problem." Thus, apparently, the Access Fund, itself, was trolled. -Jay

JT512 your had me going for a while. Having someone call the Forrest Service really put it over the top. But for some reason I have this overwhelming feeling of déjà vu. Oh, I remember now. I heard this story about a year ago. The worst part of your story is that you’re taking it as your own. You know what they do to people when they steal things; they send them to the “pokey”. You know why they call it the pokey, don’t you? So when your thinking of using others stories as your own or in the shower at Chino, remember to just say NO. So just like Michael, it is time to fess up .
