dropping the cash on a set of quarks is probably NOT the best idea for a beginner, especially if you've never swung them. differences in grip, weight, swing are all critical. here's what i did 1. find any tools you can, for as cheap as you can (i scored a pair of old straight shaft bulldogs for $35!) and climb the hell out of them for a season. you're probably not leading your first season anyway, so its not a huge concern, plus they'll make you a better climber in the end. 2. Try as many of your friends tools as you can, and see what feels best. 3. Take your time to find a pair in the offseason, after you've got a better idea of what works for you. I found a pair of BD Viper's with strike/fang combo for under $300, and i love them so far. Have been running them leashless most of the time, I really dig the options you can get with this tool. Some swear by Quarks, and i like their swing too, but the grip and swing on the Viper suits me better. For what its worth.
