Another nurse here...I work in a pediatric intensive care unit 3 days a week...leaves a lot of time. Sadly I only know my boyfriend who climbs here so I'm reliant on his schedule. Otherwise I'd def. climb more.

In reply to: what an interesting question . . . and it's so true about the climber boys and their engineering/comp sci backgrounds (more than half the guys i climb with are engineers) vk Come on now, it's not just the engineering boys! Actually I'm the only one that I've found in this plant (I'm working as a controls engineer in a car engine plant) who climbs. Lots of people that I knew when I was in school (from Mech Eng and Elec Eng) got into climbing, girls included (just arn't as many of us to start with).

I'm a post-doc in analytical chemistry/molecular biology doing research in Yellowstone. It's interesting - most of the the women (about 10 out of 14) in my department climb and many of the guys too. Probably just the town I live in.

Electrical engineer here. I find doing a masters while working full time is not conduceive to climbing. 21 is age for fun! Hopefully I'll kiss goodbye to all of it, ditching engineering and go be a starving artist/climbing bum next year.

I have a B.A. in English. I am a reading aide for K-4th grade. I also help with our 1031 exchange company we have (I do the small simple duties). I coach soccer and softball. I'm going back to school to get my teaching certificate. And I like to write poetry. I'm working on a futuristic kids novel. Also I'm a mother of two. This may look crazy but it all adds up to a full time job, non of it is full time by it's self.

I have a BA in English as well and am working on having multiple responsibilities like you! :) I'm looking to work part-time at a "regular job" and then start my own company on the side. Good luck with the teaching certificate! Personally, I think being a mom is a full-time job in itself so kudos to you. :)

I am still in college earning my degree in Exercise Science. I want to get a certificate to be a personal trainer. Right now I work at Galyan's at the rock wall, which I have no clue what is going to happen since the Dicks bought us out. :x

How's this for glamorous... I'm a bureaucrat. I spend all day moving paper from one side of my desk to the other, all financed by your tax dollars.

I'm a Therapy Tech for a company that consists of four houses and a school for mentally and physically disabled people. I've worked for the company for almost 6 months now and I love it! My schedule is not too great but I'm going to change it around so that I have more time to climb. Possibly work graveyard, but I'm not sure yet. I graduated high school in 2002 and I plan to start school again next spring. I would like to be a physical therapist. I love watching people improve and learn. It is a very rewarding occupation.

In reply to: I'm a bureaucrat. I spend all day moving paper from one side of my desk to the other, all financed by your tax dollars. Cool...I'm not the only one. I work in a federal prison classifying and assisting inmates with release planning. I also instructed skydiving for 6 years or so until it became a job instead of fun. Thanks to the fed's generous time off (4-10 hour days = 3 days off a week and 5 weeks a year annual leave after you reach 15 years of service) I get to take lots of lovely vacations in alpine locations every year. It's really interesting that so many of us have college degrees.

Let's see, I'm a 42-year-old single mom with two teenagers who started climbing last February. I have a BA in English and started my career writing/editing for a trade magazine. Took a couple years off to have kids and then got divorced and went to work for local government (you know, child care, health care, dental....). I now work in an engineering dept (with 70% men) managing environmental education programs about litter, recycling, pollution prevention, etc. Not sure how I got here but it's a great gig. The problem is now that I discovered climbing I really want to retire and just climb/travel. My youngest will graduate in '07 so if I can just hold out a few more years, I can sell the house and roam.

Go figure. I really would like to move into an entirely different career though, something where I can feel like I'm making a positive difference in society and still have time to play. Anyone...anyone :?: :?: So Jay, I'm curious...what would you have guessed I did for a living??

I'm a retired computer geek (my husband & I had our own business for many decades; I've also worked for a few small corporations as a programmer / software designer). During retirement, so far, we've written 3 guidebooks, gone climbing, gone hiking, gone peak-bagging, gone skiing... you get the picture. I still spend a lot of time hanging around my computer, tweaking our websites, reading and commenting on Forums, and doing volunteer work for the local Alzheimer's Association, Friends of the Dunes (associated with Great Sand Dunes NP in Colorado), and our local homeowners association. It's great to meet all of you! :D
