So my girlfriend and I are thinking about climbing lurking fear this summer. She's a vegetarian and I'm having difficulty coming up with ideas for food she can eat. I'm used to beef jerky and spam so... any ideas?

There are some ready to eat asian food packages out there that are good, might be vege. Can't remember the name right now...

Beans and cheese!

The only meat I usually eat on walls is some jerky, tuna, and maybe chilly. Standard vege fare should be fiine, just get lots of protien. protien supplement bars like MET-RX bars might be good.

And they are my big wall food of choice, they have regular meat jobs, veggy, and even vegan.

They are soooooo, well, Tasty!

If you are not to worried about weight cans of black beans, refried beans and lentil soups work great. Even cans of raviolis without meat sauce, all can be eaten cold also.

Dude, keep dem beans away from your veggie partner! You will suhhhfuuuh!

If she is not a total vegan try...

Jell-o pudding cups (have animal products)
Cheese and crackers in the little packets
String cheese (good for a day or so)
Yogurt bars (wad em up, easier to "get down" than power bars and have some protein)
Gu
Little Debbies, in particular oatmeal cream pies
Try a tupperware container with some fruit and veggies.

Wish I knew what tastee bites were or where to get them earlier.

Don't let her go crazy on hard-to-eat "energy bars" because after a hard day's work, these are hard to eat.

I lived for four days on the above listed crap, minus cooked food or tastee bites, and was fine. You guys should be done much sooner than that, so don't make a huge deal out of it. She won't die...of starvation, anyway.

Yes but after a day or two your poop tube smells and looks like curry, and when you open the next packet of curry that looks like it might as well have come out of the poop tube, well, the apetite for Tasty Bites dwindles.

Chef Boyardee Cheese Tortelleni (read ingredients, there is only one veggi chef boyardee AFAIK)
3 bean salad / veggi chili / cans of kidney or garbanzo or whatever beans
canned soup
soy jerky (makes ya thirsty though)
fruit in tupperware is great
string cheese
get toothpaste style squeezable tubes for jam and peanut butter and take some bread in a tupperware, works great.

...some ideas...

Some that haven't been mentioned

Spaghetti-O's or similar canned pasta product
Veggie Chili
Granola, nuts, dried fruit mixed with either canned fruit or canned milk.
Canned fruit...It's the best thing when you're tired, thirsty, and in need of sugar.
Canned fruit...worth saying again.
Starbucks double shots.
Cliff bars or anything of that nature.
Tupperware with cubes of cheese good for a couple of days.
Burritos...tortillas, canned salsa (go to the mexican section) and beans.

Some things to avoid...

Copious amounts of unsalted nuts. Taste like paste when you're tired and thirsty.
Peanut butter...see above.
The spiciest tastee bites. They taste better on the ground.

Textured vegetable Protein is the shit. inexpensive and it almost instantly rehydrates when you mix it with water, hot or cold. Mix that shit up with beans ro rice and stuff on tortillas... $$$.

I think his point is that most people don't want to reconstitute dehydrated food on a wall. Cause it uses precious water, and you don't want dehydrated food when you have a dehydrated mouth.

Although I have mixed humus on a wall to eat with cheese and tortias and it was pretty good.

someone mentioned jello, so i thought i'd throw this out .. jello now makes little plastic tubes of jello, similar to the icy-pops that we all had as kids. they're usually in the frig section and may be subject to regional distribution, but i love em because they take up less space than the jello cups and they're a little juicier, which rules.

Avoid the Tiny Vomit Pieces on a wall. I'd say anywhere even.

Dried tofu works much better than TVP in my experience on long trips, but I don't think I'd like it on a wall for the same reason that atg says.

Pasta with pesto sauce is tasty and easy to make! Blocks of parmesan cheese keep for a much longer time in hot weather than other cheeses. I find that it's strength is strong enough to be pleasant. but not too strong to be off-putting.

Canned fruit and corn.

Peanut butter too dry for me...
Homus, or dried homus.

A thermos of miso soup or somesuch.

somehow i just don't think anyone would really eat dehydrated mashed potatoes on a multiday big wall where water is at a premium and stoves are very often left on the ground. it makes less than no sense.

Here it goes : I have no bigwall experience, but I do have trekking experience, where you also need food wich is nutritious and light.

First of all, if you eat less protein for 4-5 days of your life, you won't die. Besides, you should instead concentrate on good quality fuel (carbs).

So here are examples of what I bring on my trips (everything is vegan)

Nuts, lots of nuts

Breakfast :
Home made energy bars (e-mail me if you want a good recipe)

Lunch:
Home made energy cookies (e-mail me if you want a good recipe)

Dehydrated fruit (bananas are easy to dehydrate and are high in potassium) You can also buy dehy fruit a your grocery store.

For dinnner : Dehydrated spagetti sauce (have you heard of Yves Veggie ground round? Use that instead of meat in your sauce. Don't put vegetables in it, or if you do, cut'em up real small or else they wont dehydrate)

Dehydrated veggie chili : Also withe Yves's veggie ground round. BTW, ground your kidney beans, they dehydrate better and it reduces dreaded flatulence

rice and lentils

Bread and cheese they're heavy but oh so good!!

Herbal tea and honey for drinks...you'll drink more since it tastes good...

Well that's about it, Oh yeah, for dehydration, no need to buy a dehydrator, spread the spag sauce, chili or bananas on a large shallow pan and put in the oven at 150 degrees with a 2''-3'' wooden block to keep the door opened so that the moisture can evaporate out of the oven.

ah, I think I see where you are trying to come from slick. OK, I've climbed only a handful of "big walls." I live in Alaska, where big walls are rather inaccessable, and much more dangerous and remote than anything in Utah. You should feel right proud of yourself, being a true "big wall climber," we are all miscreants and lowly-wanna-be's compared to the great andrew graham.

I am a mere alpine climber, which I guess doesn't count for anything because its not "big wall."

You've got this horribly elitist attitude that I feel compelled to address, but I think I will leave it be. I understand why dehydrated potatoes could be a pain on a big wall. Thanks for your condescending trash, asshole.

Maybe instead of being a dick and getting off on shooting other people down, you could perhaps contribute some of your infinite "big wall" wisdom here and tell us what YOU eat on a big wall, or maybe even WHY you feel so compelled to mock the contributions of others.

Right now, all you are is an annoying buzzer, a harsh and abnoxious gong. Why not put that oversized ego of yours aside and tell us what would constitute good food on a wall?

Since "big wall" seems to be the only thing that andy from salt lake will let us talk about here, I'll put in my two cents (and that's about all its worth) of big wall experience. I take two MRE's per day on walls. They require little water, little effort, they are light, organized, compact, and full of an array of good energy and nutrients. Also, they come made specially for vegetarians.

well considering this is the aid forum..not the alpine forum, and the original post was for vegetarian food to take up a big wall.. well you should take your hurt feelings to www.pretendingwecarewhatyousay.com

all this stuff has been pretty useful, id think that having a good amount of variety for whatever you bring would be best, so you won't get sick of the same thing over and over. though i imagine you have your wall comfort food. and the pitfall of trying to be too varied could end up half the stuff not being eaten.

Or worse...find out that something that tastes good on the ground is making you feel sick up there, and you'll be bummed if it's the only thing that you brought... I'm less of a fan of Tastee Bites than I used to be. And I can't even fathom eating a peanut butter Cliff Bar.

micah - you posted horribly bad beta. i would fully expect to be jumped all over if i told people to bring cans of pork 'n beans in the alpine forum, and this is no different. 99% of the time when people are asking about wall food, they want to know for something like el cap. if you are doing walls in the ruth gorge, you really shouldn't need advice about food. if you are going to recommend something dangerously impractical for nearly all walls and only semi-useful for a few alpine walls, you really should clarify it. i am an alpine climber too, but i can still keep my wall food and my alpine food straight and post about them only when they are relevant.

pretty much everything i take up walls has meat(aside from the cans of peaches or pears or whatever that i supplement meals with) so my advice isn't too useful, but i shoot down bad information when i see it.

WTF. ignore this post, there's no information, just rant.

There is so much freakin' anger in the aid forum, its not even fun to read. Flame me if you want, but I thought it was a joke (and apparantly it was).

perhaps, it would have gone over better if micah had included the other part of the irish recipe: whiskey. you don't rehydrate with water, you add whiskey to the potatoes. And, once you add the whiskey, who cares if its warm, its freakin' whiskey. dinner is served.

is all this anger a result of drinking too much, or not drinking enough? people need to relax.

Look for something called "Jerquee" in the health food store. It is a bag of little bits of vegetarian jerky that have different spicy flavors. I also prefer Clif bars, which are all vegan. For dinner food, I agree that Tasty Bites work well.

I think it's because there tend to be a lot responses from people who have NOT done a big wall in the sense the original poster was talking about. I know everyone likes to share their advice and experiences, but sometimes that advice does not apply to the type of climb originally mentioned.

When he talked about Lurking Fear, it's obvious he was talking about a multiday route on El Capitan. So anyone who has climbed El Cap, or any of the other "wall" routes up there like WFLT, SF of the Column, Prow would have answers that he would find useful and correct. I think some of the anger in this forum comes from people who HAVE that experience seeing people who've never been near Yosemite or those style big wall climbs giving advice about big walls there and what to do.

I have not climbed El Cap yet so I have nothing to offer the original poster. But I am a vegetarian and newbie wall climber so I am very interested in reading responses from those who've cooked or ate veggie style 1,000 ft off the deck on the Captain. :P

So you need to climb El Cap to be able to offer any advice on vegetarian food on a big wall?

it sure helps. otherwise you get well-intentioned but completely incorrect advice like several non wall climbers have offered up in this thread.

I dont have much experience with big walls, but I think Ive got a good suggestion. Petes Tofu 2 Go! Its triangles of precooked tofu that comes with different sauces. You just squeeze on the sauce and away you go! Super simple, high protien finger food with very little packaging. They have lots of different flavours-Mango wasabi, sesame ginger...... Its a canadian based company, so I dont know if its available in the states, but its worth a try.

I swear I was the first guy to bring tasty bites up a wall! I've also made the mistake of bringing two large pizzas from curry up the Salathe. Think juicy food that won't make you too thirsty.

Ok Spray aside, I recommend Jaipur vegetables as one of the best wall tasty bites, which you can buy from tastybite.com. If you dump some raisens and nuts into the foil before you eat em, you'lll increase the calories without the dry sensation of eating nuts plain.

I live near most the wall I climb so I have this luxury. I cook a nice dinner or two, say stuffed pasta with pesto with veggies or shrimp. Then I vacuum pack em and put em in the freezer. They come out the day of the wall and seem to last long enough although I eat em first and save the tasty bites for last.

Peace

karl
