The frost may still be on the ground when you wake in the morning, but the days are getting longer and warmer. Even though people have been gathering at their favorite climbing areas already, is anyone interested in having a Spring gathering at Rumney to start the year?

I might be down for it, but where you gonna camp ??? Camping is not permitted at RP, and access is a bit on the sensitive side.

was this moved to M&E because of the access issues, or is it some sort of uber private moderators only gathering?

In reply to: um, why is this in M&E I'm guessing that he meant to hit Events and Gatherings, and missed by one line... Anyway, I live 1 hour and 10 minutes from Rumney, so if people are having a gathering there, I will try to show up with my ropegun in tow.

I have a place where we can pitch tents. It's between Dorchester and Cannan. It's about a good half an hour from Rumney on Rt. 118 and there is plenty of room for tents. The owner of the land, my sister-in-law, is all for it. As long as we behave and not burn the woods down ... she's cool. I'll need to finalize a date with her as soon as we can come up with one. PM me if you're going or for information.

I'm just showing a general interest here. I was planning on heading to Rumney, but I was thinking more like in two weeks. Did you have any dates in mind? And since we're on the topic, what's up with camping at Rumney. I haven't been there in over a year. Last time I went we could camp in the backyard of this nice lady's farm for a few bucks a night, and just across from the crag. Is that no more? If so, are there any alternatives?

A group of us from RPI will most likely be heading over to rumney for the 29th of April for a couple days. Last year we stayed at a campground not too far from the crag. Only the group sites where open if I remeber correctly.

Woo-woo for the annual spring Rumney trip. It's gonna be a fun one. Maybe this year the "campground" on the farm owned by the lady will be open. Either way, it'll be a rock'n good time. Can't wait to use my new quickdraws

It's confirmed. Memorial weekend is on. Campsites are taken care of for those who don't mind traveling a few miles (see below). The hosts are excited to meet everyone. If there is going to be enough people, I may be able to get a band for one night. I will need a “campsite” count so we can ensure everyone has a place … we may have to mow the fields. So … who’s in??? I had a map, but this page will not show it. Check out mapquest. Rumney to 69 Stevens Road, Cannan, NH. Directions Show Turn by Turn Maps 1. Starting in RUMNEY, NH on QUINCY RD - go < 0.1 mi 2. Turn on MAIN ST - go 0.7 mi 3. Turn on MOOSILAUKE RD/RUMNEY ROUTE 25 - go 4.1 mi 4. Bear on DORCHESTER RD - go 2.0 mi 5. Continue on DORCHESTER RD/NH ROUTE 118 - go 8.9 mi 6. Turn on LARY POND RD/STEVENS RD - go 0.2 mi 7. Arrive at 69 STEVENS RD, CANAAN

I'd like to renew my interest in this gathering. It'd be nice to meet new people! So if I get this right, memorial week end would be the last week end of May right? Although I expect that time to be pretty busy for me, I think I could manage to make it work. I'm happy to see we would have a campground nearby, but I'd like to ask again the same question, since I was inquiring for other times I'd wanna go. What's up with camping at Rumney? Can we still camp behind the lady's farm across from the crag? If not, what do you guys do?

I'm not sure about the lady across the road ... but, there is very little else in the area. You'll find hotels, motels and inns, and a couple of scanty places to pitch a tent if you look real hard. I'll try to get you more information and PM you. I'm also looking forward to see new and old friends!

In reply to: Alan, I'll give it a maybe at this point. Unfortunetly my wife and I are house hunting and I also have a wedding that weekend and am not sure how much committment it's all going to require yet. So we'll see, but I'll do my best. TD Priorities do suck at times, but very understandable. If anyone bails on the wedding and you find a house, we'll be lookin' fer ya! Have fun, whichever you happen to be doing

BTW, have a friend who was down there last weekend, and found a tick hitching a ride on his leg. They've sent the tick off to check for Lyme disease. Is this a new phenomenom for NH?

Yes, ticks are a concern for Lyme disease, but have been for years. Lyme disease have been found in Southern NH more then in the Northern parts of NH, which they do link back to these ticks. Ticks, Rattlesnakes, Scorpians, Copperheads ... to me, no difference. They all bite

18 More Days n' Counting! Campsites are ready and the days are getting warmer. So far, I have just one reply for vegetarian food. This must mean that the rest of us eat meat?? There are a couple of rules that I've been requested to post: 1. Sorry, no dogs at the campsite. They have dogs there and they love to bark if other animals are around, so the owners ask that you leave your "best friend" at home ... bummer. 2. Since they are on a well, their shower heater could not support all of us, so to be fair we will have to bath in the brook at Rumney or swimming at the local lake. Burrrrrrr. Just like real camping! Now for the local information. The nearest store is 5 miles away. If you need anything, you should pick it up on the way to the campsite. There are two stores in Canaan, but Rumney would be the easiest place to pick up supplies. Friday and Saturday nights, Canaan has their local dirt track races. There is a small admission fee, but for those who like to watch crazy locals slammin' metal, this is the place to be. You will definitely hear it from Colleen's house. The noise echoes up the valley. The owners ask that we be a peaceful group... no drunken fights ... and they are hoping that people bring their musical instruments for around the campfire. Any questions??

Just 1: will people be taking care to not poison the brook through the use of soap &/or shampoos that are toxic to the true "locals" (i.e. birds, fish, turtles, frogs, salamanders, worms, insects, bacteria, etc.)? :?: Good point ... I will have biodegradable soap and shampoo for those who do not have theirs. We have thought of this and prepared for it. We can only hope that people will follow through and take care of the "natives".

I've been so excited that I've been reprimanded for this, so I’ve been really quiet … Everything is in place at the campsite. The only thing I can think of is crossed fingers hoping the weather is nice. See You There!

Just wondering: are noobs welcome? Me and my friend are regulars at the gym for TR. Generally nice guys. My friend plays pretty good flamenco guitar and I can sing after a fashion. We're looking to get outside. Could you use two more lackeys? Thanks Paul

In case anyone is concerned about the "biodegradable" soap issue, here is the low-down: Peppermint Castile Soaps ingredients are: mint infusion, castile soap (saponified oils of olive, palm, coconut and castor), peppermint (essential oil), rosemary extract, grapefruit seed extract. Doing a little research, it appears that this soap will not harm the environment, but then again, I'm not educated in the art of soap making, a chemist, herbalist, ecologist or anything else that would enlighten us on what is ecologically sound. If anyone else would like to enlighten us on this matter, feel free to inform our climbing community. Otherwise, 8 MORE DAYS!

Biodegradable soap does not break down in water, only in soil. I do not know what effect it has on the life in the water. So, if you're really worried about it, use it on land and not in a river or lake. Mr. Mons

In reply to: are people showing up friday? i'd be down for climbing all day fri if someone wants to go up a tad early (assuming the camping place will be available fri night I'll be at the campsite Friday to ensure everything arrived as scheduled. After that, I plan on being at Rumney around 3 to 4 in the afternoon. When will people be showing up Friday at Rumney? We copuld meet in the main parking lot at any given time. When do you all think is a good time to meet up? I could have directions to the campsite for those who want to climb until dark.

Just follow the Kanc to the end and head North on I-93 to the Rumney exit past Plymouth. Keep in touch through NEB or here, I am hoping to show up for a day or two next weekend. You should hang with Meg and I since you are both climbing so strong now! And congrats again on winning the New England North Regionals!

Just follow the Kanc to the end and head North on I-93 to the Rumney exit past Plymouth. No no, use your other left foot! 8^) What Edge means is that from North Conway you drive just south through Conway, turn right onto the Kancamagus Highway, and follow this scenic drive westward through the mountains to Lincoln and I-93. Then go south (not north) on I-93 to the Rumney exit which comes just before (not after) Plymouth.

I'll be up late Sat, and then Sun/Mon. I think I might have to pass up camping in favor of staying at Dad's cabin in Ashland, unless some "responsible adults" would like to help me convince him otherwise... I'll have to be careful not to tire myself out Sunday, because some friends, Social Outcast and I have a doubledate on Monday.

Jealous, yet fearing the crowds of Memorial Day Weekend. BTW when is Bike Week? Another weekend to avoid Rumney, if only for the traffic on the way back south. Work weekends, climb all week.

This kinda came up on another board... Try to carpool as much as you can .. the parking lots are going to be pretty busy i suspect and there is no along the road parking other then in the marked spots.. if there are no spots or in the parking lot there is parking at the town lot before you take the turn onto buffalo road(thanks for the info loran) Don't forget lots of water, bug spray, fooooooood, and patience.. walls will be busy and projects full but the rock willllll be there for a long time :) I don't think i'll be camping but we'll try to stop in at least one of the nights to see what craziness is going down sincerly Your lord and master..... Thanks for the tips jakedatc. There will be a large grill for anyone to use. (I have 4 bags of charcole at the site.) There is also a large fire pit for the evenings. If you want to bring a cooking stove for your personal use, this is fine, but there can be no campfires around the tents. The area is large enough for everyone, but, it being part of their lawn, I've been asked that this be followed. The car pool is a great idea. There is enough room at the site to keep the cars safe if anyone decides to pool it. There is good news about the bugs ... it'll be windy this weekend which will keep them little buggers at bay! Just in case Mother Nature decides to change her mind, bringing some bug juice is a good idea. Any more tips ... suggestions?
