I used to go to a few bars all of the time and chat with the guys about whatever. I started climbing a few months back and went out less. I found that tonight, after a 2 month absence (due to saving cash for climbing) that it was the only thing I wanted to talk about and the only thing the others politely asked about. Climbing has made me boring. As an added bonus, the master (I am in Japan) gave a little speech like this:

I always thought jetlag was really cute and her body was really feminine. But seeing her today, she is really different. (gestures around shoulders and breasts indicating muscles)

Then he asked if we could arm wrestle.

Which came first the chicken or the egg? And who cares- if you love climbing that's all that is important.

Jetlag: I think you are correct. I used to talk a lot more about other things. I still discuss them, but not as much. As more and more of my energy is poured into climbing, it oiccupes more of my mind, and is the topic of choice very often.
If its any consolation, I'm sure many climbers find your "new" physique very appealing. (I hope that was said in as non-inappropriate way as possible).

Well, the responses certainly illustrate the difference between somone with a serious pursuit and a fanatic. Is climbing an important part of your life or a substitute for it? (retorical question I know).

I have found that it has disconnected me from regular "boring" people. We really have nothing much to talk about. Me describing the sick sloper that I hung off of to place gear doesn't make sense to a non-climber. Most are in awe that I climb though. Which makes me exciting to some people.

in japan, as you'll find out soon enough, a master asking a girl if she'd like to arm wrestle is akin to asking if she'd like to make out. after he has defeated you and has you wrenched into a submissive posture by the arm, as you can see, at that point, making out would only be most appropriate. by very subtly mentioning he found you cute and feminine, and very slickly alluding to your uncharacteristic yet exotic gestures and muscular breasts, he was most definitely giving you the signals, indicating he was turned on very much by even the slightest gesticulation and turn of your body. he was also feeling you out, by the way, to see if you were gesturing with your shoulders and heaving your breasts on purpose to turn him on. so uh, did you say yes, to the arm wrestling? if you did, please give us the play by play. anyway, hope this helps. foreign culture is such a mystery sometimes

and no, you don't sound boring

Since I started climbing, I go out much less than I used to, due to the fact that I want to wake up at 4:00am and go climbing. I talk about climbing a lot more now. My "old" friends think I am boring and exciting at the same time. I think it will depend on who you talk to whether they think you are boring or one-sided.

I don't know what a master is, but I'm guessing that it is a complement if he wants to arm wrestle.

i actually think that climbing has made me more exciting. first of all, i do most of my climbing at the local gym, and when you're there that much you make friends quick. these are people that you've at least got conversations about sick clopers and trad placements in common, and who don't mind getting a round of drinks. other people beg me to take them climbing at devil's lake this summer when the weather is nice. i think that either you have to keep other interests to be able to talk to the common man, or else ditch them all and just hang out with climbers...

Ok first of all on the weekends most people spend there day watching TV, or shopping or just sitting on a couch trying to figure out what to do. Or maybe the occasional smoke at the park then kick a soccer ball around. While you.........your hiking in some beautiful places, meeting some cool people and at times.....100's of feet up doing things that most people would consider action movie material.

Second........you spend say $40 bucks at the bar and you get a few cold things in your hand which run out after 10 min anyways, maybe in someone elses hand since your trying to impress, it's crowded, at times smoky, and the next day you feel like shit, your $40-$60 bucks poorer and you have nothing to show. 1 or 2 weekends not going to the bar and you got your self some nice new equipment.

Or do what I do. Drink water (atleast you have a cup in your hand) and that way you get the money and the social time.
Then when some girl is like
"oh how come your not drinking?"
you can be like:
"oh well..I'm going climbing and hiking tomorrow and I want to feel up to par"
Then she'll be like:
"wow your a climber.....and hiking.......that sounds so cool, must be beautiful"
Then you say:
"yea you should try it sometime, I'll take ya .......whats your #, I usually go on the weekens"

In the end ..........everyone's happy.

Usually if I'm out and I strike up a conversation the "what do you like to do" conversation comes around. That or the friends I'm with mention it in a mocking tone. They think I'm weird (obviously don't climb). Specially when you've had a few and you start looking at the side of a building alittle different then others.

It sounds like a common enough problem - if you are involved 100% in climbing, the outside life fades away, the friendships of the BC times (before climbing) either think you're crazy, or will politely ask you a question or two about the w-end, shrug and turn away. Lately I'm getting tired of answering the basic set of questions, so most of the time i just shut up and go outside. I don't really worry about being boring - enough self-confidence for that - it's rather that all those "hot" topics of usual conversations (...latest TV show, a ball game or Iraq affairs...) leave me cold and uninterested to contribute.

My issue is a bit different, although on the same note - does banking your all on climbing makes you loose out on the outside world? For the moment my answer is no, as I get a full range of experiences in climbing, far more replete than what I used to get w/o it. However sometimes i'm afraid to wake up one day and feel empty - if the wish to climb goes away, i risk having nothing left...

if the wish to climb goes away, you can always pick up where you started from. the bars will still be there :). but seriously, you can make new friends, start new relationships, find a new activity, i dont think you need to look at other aspects in your life as in constant need of investment

btw, does anyone remember what nonclimbers used to talk about while standing at the bar with a glass of beer?

here are some topics i remember:

if they are mountain bikers, they would talk about the sick fall so and so took

if they are snowboarders, they talked about the sick jump they did

but most of the time, the music is so loud, that you can't hear what the person says, anyway, so they just stand there and smile.

I have a very addictive personailty (bordering on obsessive compulsive  ) and learned at an early age that variety truly is the spice of life.

I Rock Climb, but I also: hike, mtn bike, do triathlons, surf, play tennis, play golf, play raquetball, snowboard, read lots of books from fiction to non-fiction, read the paper, play computer games, spend time with my family, help my daughter with her school work, help my wife with her school work, piddle around the house doing this and that (generally though I have no clue about what I am doing  ) , work on our cars, the list goes on and on.

So yes, climbing can make you boring if you are so obsessed that you allow it to take over your life. Not that climbing isn't tremendously fun or rewarding, it just does not encompass the full range of experiences LIFE has to offer IMO.

hehe engineering + climbing = fun!

Anyway, I find other people to be boring...regardless of what they think of me. I'm sorry, but I don't think that playing video games, watching tv, getting wasted every weekend, going shopping, and all the other boring things people do are interesting at all. It seems like a lot of the activities people persue in their daily lives are simply "filler." Like, they are just things used for making the time pass more quickly. However, climbing gives you goals and keeps you healthy. It's not just some sort of diversion from daily life, just to help pass the time. It is what you look forward to while you're at work. While other people can't wait to go get wasted on friday night, I can't wait to pack my stuff to go climbing.

I might be somewhat of a hypocrit on this one, since I like going to parties and stuff, but still...I can't imagine how pointless life would feel if it was all I had to look forward to.

I would say I'm the same level of interesting to my friends (which would be....very), because I have always been rather brazen, quick-witted and funny in a noncritical way, and well-read, thoughtful, blah, blah, blah....

But I was also self-deprecating and a little afraid to be seen as a woman. The interesting thing is that, in the few short months since I started climbing, those two aspects of my personality have practically evaporated.

I think it has something to do with how we, as climbers, find our way through the problems that come up as we progress (hopefully this can be a life-long process; the deeper one looks, the more there is to see), such as balance, movement and rhythm. That the choice I make in how I place a foot or hand makes the diference between whether the transition goes - that's an incredible feeling of personal power in a quantum way.

My muscle structure is visibly tightening and my posture improving, and this directly affects my self-esteem. I'm feeling good about myself, and it's showing. Confidence is not boring, in any way, shape or form (as long as it's not obnoxious or grandiose). I'm seeing my outer life begin to match what I've been inside all this time, and definitely digging the change. So, apparently are others, because they have told me the transformation is incredible.

Now my friends are starting to ask me to take them climbing at the gym I go to. Since I am looking to be climbing outdoors, I'm like..."hmmmm, maybe come fall we'll have an awesome group of chicks out at the Gunks and up for road trips." Watch out!

If climbing makes you boring, you're not doing the right stuff. I can keep an audience riveted with my tales for hours. My teachers stop me in the halls and ask for a new tale.

ok, seriously now, there've been boring people in this world long before climbing. in general, if a person, say, you, is boring, chances are, that's the way you've grown to be, or have conditioned yourself to be, and climbing has nothing to do with it. zilch. nil. natta. after completing the requisite undergrad classes on how to be interesting, many of us find no problems at all climbing and being our interesting selves all at the same time. those people who still think and might indeed find themselves boring, well, please do know that this depressing, fun sapping cross of dullardhood is yours and yours alone to bear. please deal with the issue of overcoming or coming to terms with your boringness on your own. DO NOT try to pass it off as something that has anything remotely to do with climbing, as if it's the climbing that's making you dull, and thereby imply that the rest of us who climb also suffer and manifest the same dullness. WE DO NOT. and don't you even dare

One should remember not to combine these two activities, lest he get halfway there and discover he has forgotten his harness.

I used to hang out late with my friends, most nights of the week. Then as it started getting warmer and i started getting up earlier in order to beat the heat when i would go climb, i had this delimma...I could either hang out with my friends as we sit around doing nothing trying to think of something to do, being bored out of my mind, or i could go home and sleep, wake up early, and head out to the crag for a much more exciting time of climbing. hmmm, what to do, what to do.

How can such a beautiful activity produce boredom.

[brown]You are absolutely right. I don't intend to generalize, but I get this uncomfortable feeling around climbers- they (we) can be so arrogent and annoyingly intelligent (or so we think) It seems that climbers get this feeling that they are "enlightened" beyond all others.

Well, I used to skate- that was a blast, too. My buddies were hilarious! We had good times. It seems that since I have been climbing- my aquantainces have been boring and snobby.

Who knows, but I agree with Jetlag.[/brown]

I used to be interesting. I used to take an interest in a wide variety of things in the wider world. I used to read, write, watch too much TV, meet and talk to lots of different people on a wide variety of topics. I used to be witty, funny, charming.

And then I started climbing once a week and because it was something new and exciting, it would be the highlight of each week. Every weekend, my thoughts would gravitate towards climbing. After awhile, I got stronger and started climbing several times a week, and slowly - insidiously - climbing thoughts seeped into every brain cell in my head.

Nowadays, I am dull and boring and all the jokes I make revolve around sex and climbing and I resort to laughing at my own jokes when I find myself in the company of non-climbers (which fortunately doesn't happen very often). Outside of climbing, I know nothing of current events, politics, popular entertainment, history, science, foreign cultures. I am finding it increasingly difficult to function in society. It's a wonder I still know how to button my shirt.

This cannot be right. Something's gotta give.

And that is why I am not climbing today. I decided to let normalcy win back some ground, just for one day. Today is the first Saturday that I have spent not climbing, as far as I remember. Am I bored out of my skull? You bet! I turned on the television and none of the channels had anything on climbing. I go on the internet and was overwhelmed to find that so much has happened since I last paid attention to the outside world (Apparently, there has been 2 major wars in the past 3 years) Rc.com is the last site I bookmarked ...and wait, are these things still called bookmarks?

But, say what you will, I am proud of myself for making it so far because I just looked at the clock and it's almost 4:00pm. I've read all the posts on this site, I've flaked my rope out 8 times in the past hour and I'm running out of candy, but I figure if I have a heavy dinner, I could knock off early and make it through the night without any major incidents.

And tomorrow, as I have promised myself, will be a full day at the crag.

:D

i think i'm boring. isn't your opinion of yourself the only thing that really matters?

do you feel people don't find you interesting or that you're preoccupied by climbing and feel that makes you boring? if the former, listen to other people tell stories so you can learn to spin your own. you don't have to have had near death experiences to tell interesting stories but they help

I think of myself as interested in alot of different things.

the downside is maybe I won't master one thing (becoming rich and famous and the like). the upside is that I don't get bored or boring.

I think your master's speech/comments could definitely be a compliment. after the initial surprise, I think that's a good way to take it. different cultures can value different qualities. don't know their names but have seen some Japanese women professional climbers who are totally strong. I'm still trying to figure out how breasts get muscular but well, the days after climbing when my pecs are sore, I wish I had more muscle there...

Has climbing made me boring? It all depends on what you would consider boring... challenging yourself in such an extreme way as climbing is hardly boring to me. I do find it difficult to chat with some of my non- climbing friends at times when all I can think about is the wall, but that just comes with the lifestyle. Climbing hasn't made me boring, climbing has made me.

Huh!? Ive been climbing for twenty years and I will say that climbing takes over your life slowly but surely Ive stopped having any form of normal social life. Fridays were always early to bed then up before dawn and off up into the hills. The obsession grows to horrific proportions as thoughts of the crux holds on your latest project obliterate any rational thought processes. Your clothes become threadbare and torn you forgo the haircut for another weekend roadtrip. Your appearance and the crazed expression in your eyes scares most norms away. Those that are brave (stupid) enough to try and strike up a conversation with you are greeted with blank stares and vague mutterings about gastons and crimps. You enter a paralell universe and become one with the zen gods of climbing. Normal people and their patheticly boring existence cease to have any relevance to your being!!!

Weell, not quite but you get the picture. Climbing will turn you into a social misfit, but boring? NO WAY!! Hey if it gets really bad we can always learn french and move to Verdon!

some climbers are boring, that's for sure, but lots aren't. it kind of depends on the type of people you hang out with in general; i think you'll attract similar-minded climbers likewise. that said, there do seem to be a heck of a lot of boring, one-dimensional climbers out there. but that could probably be said about any obsessive pursuit... exciting from a distance, just another challenge to learn from and move on, at least emotionally, once you figure it out. or maybe that's just me. climbing will always be a great love of mine in any case, but in general it's something best done, not talked about--that's when it gets boring. so what the hell am i doing here, on this website? stuck on an island in panama without a rock in sight!!! excuse the rambling... i'm tent-bound and the monkeys are moving in. thanks for letting me bore you!

The only people who find me boring as a climber are the ones who I now avoid like the plague. I used to spend at least 50% of my paycheck on cigarettes, alcohol, and drugs. I would hang out with really "cool" people that I had nothing in common with all night and sleep half of the day. I guess you could say I was "cool" too in my local rave scene. Right now, I have just enough money to support my high protien, high carb diet because the rest went to cheapholds.com. I can't afford to and frankly don't want to go out tonight, so I've been climbing on my home wall. I've lost and regained about 15 lbs in the best of ways. The shows on television seem asenine to me now, but I like to listen to David Letteman while working out because he makes me fall off my wall from laughing with the two or three jokes per night that are actually funny. I've gotten extremely picky about who I'll date for compatibility reasons. I now find myself getting along with even devout Muslims at work who used to see me as a godless heathen. I think what may make us seem boring to some is that we like to do, not talk. We live our lives ourselves rather than through other people. Most sports have a very distinct line between fans and athletes. We have amateurs and professionals, but I just see Tony Lamiche as someone better than I'll ever be, not an excuse to slack off because of it. We make some uncomfortable and yes, jealous, because we remind them of what couch potatoes they really are. People don't always like to hear about things that they could do with enough effort but never will due to their inablity to make the required level of committment despite an internal desire to do so. If your friend could fly, would you like him/her rubbing it in by talking about it or would you want to talk about something more banal?
