Hello all, New to the whole climbing thing and was curious as to what people recommend clothing-wise when climbing. Also curious for what the ladies wear as my wife is starting to climb also. Would like to know details also like, sunglasses, head wear, underwear etc etc. Any recommendation would have to be in line with the following rules though... Rule 1 - Look good. Rule 2 - Do the job. Rule 3 - If you can't do the job... look good. Cheers.

PRANA. Just go to the nearest store and buy some shorts. They are expensive, but great for bouldering, look very good and are durable. If you want to sportclimb, i reccomend Cassins "yoshua tree" or "red rock" shorts; they are more tightly fit, but not tights. Wear a loose T-shirt with or withouth sleeves (you can cut them off) from either prAna or Patagonia or Fanatic or a cool swet shirt. Of couse it doesent have to be a brand, it has to look cool and must not restrict your movement. And for the cold weather dont forget the climbers favourite fleece (Mammut or Millet) and a fleece hat (i have one from mountain hardware). If you have a good body, consider climbing topless . Anyway, DONT NEVER EVER WEAR TIGHTS. I hope that helped you. Oh, one last thing try to do the job, beceuse nothing is more embarassing when you fail to send in all thise fancy chlotres and the next thing some torn bad-ass cliber comes along and sends barefoot . Nothing looks cooler then someone trying hard and succeding, even if he is a begginer and the route/problem is a relatively easy one. Everybody was a begginer once. Just dont Show off too much and you`ll do just fine. Climb on

Underwear wise = Anything comfortable. Just wear comfortable shorts (not toooo short)or pants and a T-shirt, or muscle shirt (singlet). But not too baggy, Baggy = uncomfortable. As for sunglasses, any that don't fall off your head and wear one of those little glasses holder on them so if they do fall off your head they aren't going to come crashing to the ground! For the ladies... A singlet top or slightly tight top (or T-shirt) and Stretch pants... slightly tight but stretchy and flexable. or you can just where normal shirts. What ever looks good and is comfortable. Keep Climbing

I prefer neon-colored tights that extend slightly below my knee, either a pink or pastel green tanktop(slightly flaired where it is tucked into my tights), and brightly colored shoes with laces of contrasting color. I try to keep my mullet flaired approximately the same style as my tanktop flair. p.s. as the tights get tighter, the looks get sharper!!

They sure do, and for the females out there I recommend the 'femullet' - the ladies version of the popular classic. This involves some feather to the sides, curling iron the curl the top back, and the very back - well knotty and scraggley is just fine. You may think that you resemble some white trash, trailer living family with 10 kids running in the yard and you're right, but go for it! Seriously though, check out this link: http://www.mulletsgalore.com/ it's hilarious. My rec's for what to wear - don't buy into the whole Prana and Grammici (sp?) thing. I dont' know about you folks but I tend to rip things when I climb - getting snagged or whatever. The salvation army has tons to offer us poor climbers. And the mullet gets you a discount there.

Dear God, I really hope that you're not serious about looking good for climbing??? If you are, I'm sorry, but climbing is one of those sports (like every sport) where no one cares what the hell you wear, they care about how you perform. First, get good. Second, get a company to hook you up. Third, then you won't need to worry about attire because your sponser will be hooking you up. But plus you won't care because you'll be good. Seriously, wear whatever feels comfortable. Prana shorts aren't going to make you climb better. Patagonia shirts won't make you dyno harder. Northface jackets won't help you dig your pick in ice more accurately. Just climb.

Oh yeah, one thing will help you climb better though, without practice. They said it before too. I went from climbing 5.5 to 5.11d within a day. I just cropped my hair and got a mullet. Wow, did that ever help!

Hey! Nothing wrong with looking good while climbing. I've not bought anything specifically for climbing - I use some hiking pants I got when working for Nike ACG, some Ralph Lauren pants my mom gave me that are capris and pretty damn good for climbing, and some canvas pants I got on sale at Gap for $10. Man, am I a yuppie or what? Top with sports bra of your choice, either a Columbia tank top or ACG shirt and North Face Fleece. In a week or so, though, I should have two pairs of Prana pants thanks to the Yosemite Association. Woo hoo.

Well, I guess on top of a mullet I would recommend FTL boxerbriefs.

Dude... ...I just gave oneballjay a 10 rating because he summed up everything that I tried to say in a semi-nice way...and I quote... "dont be a wanker do what feels good." plus you used the word "wanker"! Dude, you rock!

I wear an old T-shirt that says "OKLAHOMA" and a pair of hand-me-down cotton excersize pants. Recommended only for indoor climbing! The pants would probly get trashed on real rock.

A mullet (Mull-et), is often referred to as the "business-in-the-front-party-in-the-back" hair style. It is the newest fad and only the coolest people have one. Usually seen only on men, their is such thing as a femullet, or a mullet for women. If you visit http://www.mulletsgalore.com you can see pictures of some of the most hip and coolest people that walk the earth!!!

Tyger, I can't help much with the whole fashion statement idea, and my priorities are more about saving money than being on top of the fads, but I have a couple of loose cotton-style pants that come about mid-calf that I like to wear climbing. And I usually get my tops from Target or some place equally fashionable. I've got some little spaghetti strap shirts that you see people wearing in aerobics or whatever, and some plain sleeveless (cotton) shirts that I like to wear. Of course, I'm also in Texas with blistering heat and ridiculous humidity, so that feeds into my "style" decisions .. everything must "breathe" and let me move.
