Derry High rocks is officially open. Origionally 2 different owners claimed to own the land. One said it was OK to climb, the other did not.

Now, a new owner has purchased the land, and set the land under a tax credit that makes it open for public use. This information comes from an extremly reliable source. The land is now open, and climbing is legal.

Bring a garbage bag, and make sure to respect the property, we don't want to have these rocks off limits again.

LOL-- Honestly I am a trad climber, who dabbles in sport when I am too lazy to carry a heavy pack, or when I can't find someone who is competant enough to second me. Who knows, maybe it could use some new anchors... LOL WVU, can you please forward me the directions?

Just to set the record straight. I am not a bolting monster. If you can climb it traditionally, then there is no reason for bolts.

I am heading to Derry next Friday. I have heard great things about the 5.10 handcrack.

Trad is rad. U headin to rendezvous? I know you aren't a monster.....actually the opposite...I've heard through the grapevine you are pretty cool. Carrying heavy packs sucks. My wife still hasn't figured out that even though my pack is twice as large, I put twice as much weight in hers.....20lbs of shit in a 20L packCool. As soon as I get a free weekend I'll be up to derry. Be safe and I'm sure I'll bump into ya sometime.......

It's not an issue of money for me, but the event was built around EVERYONE being able to enjoy, dirtbags, and the employeed. I am curious to hear reports about this years NRR. Rain sucks. I guess the only positive I get from rain is water filled banks for my kayak trip in a couple weeks.

I just went there on Friday to climb and the Game Commission stopped and said it was closed for climbing and any other entrants. You may obtain permission but you have to be part of an organization and have liability insurance. You now have to get permission straight from the landowners to climb.

So it is posted and no one can go in their.

It has been almost a year and I have not heard from land owners on this one. I really want to climb there.

Anyone hear anything further? I do know it is still posted but heard possible talks of Wester PA Conservency leasing it.

After Tim Anderson worked hard to get Ohiopyle climbing open, there's no reason to climb here. DHR is some sweet rock but its destroyed and it really takes away from the enjoyment.

The Ohiopyle climbing on the otherhand, is even sweeter but still in a beautiful pristine area.

I know about the area but the reason I like DHR is that it is under 30 minutes from my house.

You all had my hopes for a minute there... I thought the "cooperative land sharing group” branch out past hunting season for a minute…

The game commission threw me out and was pretty nasty about it last summer. The signs are not very clear and they watch it really close. Glad our tax dollars are being used wisely…

Wow I'm glad we have educated people back on the forum. Game Commission is solely funded by your tickets, timber sales, and hunting licenses.

Anyway, still closed. Talked to some people that said a land trust thing might be in the works to get it open for public use again or maybe permits to climb...

Does anyone know how old those bolts are at the top rope anchor for the 5.10 crack? Derry high rocks are still very much closed to climbing but I would like to know how old those bolts are.

Well, it's been a year since the last post about DHR. I'll try to make a trek up there soon and see what the situation is.

It is still closed to climbing, and will be indefinitely. The game commission is up there all the time writing tickets so I'd avoid the area if I were you.

I was there in late fall, 2011. It's a lost cause... I talked to some locals who were "adopting a highway" while I was trying to find it. They were a little cagey about the location and knew that the land owner (an attorney?) was uncooperative. I found it nonetheless, and although the surronding area was marked as a cooperative with the game commission, the High Rocks themselves were posted all the way around by DCNR.

Someone should really change the title of this thread so people dont just read the title and get the wrong idea.
