pay retail, it helps the industry, or get job in the business and earn a pro deal.

Who really WANTS to pay retail? I refuse to.

See???? My point exactly. All the posturing most of you have against Punk wanting to save a few $$$ is hypocritical. In the end you're all no different.

Phrases like "it's not what you know but who" haven't been around for years for no reason.

Okay Punk, here's the deal. I've worked in the bike industry for many years and the climbing industry works much the same way.

1. you can get an employee pro deal by working for a climbing store or an industry manufacturer. Most people get their "bro" deal this avenue. Also guide companies and professional guides get deal through manufacturers because they will promote/use the products with clients.

2. The actual pro sponsorship deal requires lots of work. If a company is going to sponsor you they want something in return. Most athletes work for years to get the attention of a company. They send out resumes, work with photographers getting their pics in mags. If BD is going to sponsor you, they want something in return, you're going to present their product in a positive way, get your pictures and name circulated. It's a hard market to break. Sad to say sponsorship/pro-deals are but a dream for most. The company isn't into giving product away for free.

I agree with most of you. Climbing is like with any other sport, Get out there, work your butt off and people will take notice. I had the same thing with Skiing and snowboarding. I spent years paying retail and working as an instructor and shop employee and only after proving myself and puting im my time have i made connections and gotten prodeals. The connections you make shouldn't be calls to all the companies saying you want deals on stuff. if you truly deserve the deals they will come to you. in the mean time. Hang out, have a good time and find a local shop that you trust and deal with them. they will usualy cut you some deals and it helps the local places stay in business and then when one of the shops sales reps asks about good people in the area they will be likely to give out your name if a deal does come up.

I aggree with most people, earn your pro-deals, I like mine too much, and worked too hard to get them to risk losing them by hooking a guy up on the internet.

I do disagree with tnwagner though. If you want a pro-deal write the company tell them why you think you deserve one, and that you want to have a deal with them. If you want sponsor ships then there is definitely alot more work involved, and you are alot more likely to get it if they apporach you, but if all you want is a discount on retail gear then ask.

EARN IT!

(then MAYBE i'll consider putting in a good word for ya to a friend of a guy whose ex-girlfriends sister used to maybe have those kind of connections. Of course, that's only if you can make me mistake you for a PRO!

I'd never stoop to such baselessness. It's not moral and taints the whole industry.

Unless of course the rep is hot and has a new AT setup for cheap....

I love the "go earn it" comments.... even when you have access to pro deals, alot of times they make it so difficult to access that half the time....its not worth it to wait 3 months or more to get your deal. by that time the season is halfway through... and if your lookin for a big ticket item....you get to sit on your butt and check the mail.....a fine thanks for supporting a company.
you "pro"s have too much time on your hands if youve got nothing better to do than bitch about how you deserve to get marked down items more than someone else thats struggling just as hard to make it....
hell, ill go spend the night in line for a shot at USED gear....
by the way....does anyone have a spool of rope they are cutting up?

Here's what I do: there are two shops where I buy all of my gear. Anytime I need anything, I have them order it or buy it there if they have it in stock. In exchange for my loyalty and support of their small, local business, I rarely pay retail for anything. Support local climbing shops and the economy around climbing areas, especially where the economy is otherwise depressed. You can make a difference, and people will notice that you're a climber and a regular at their shop/restaurant/whatever and make the connection between climbers and business. This involvement of climbers in the communities where they climb helps to keep access open and like I said, when people know you and your loyalties, you rarely pay full price.

Unfortunately, that only works when you've got a gear store in town.. The only decent on in Roc went out of business... and EMS sure isn't going to give me a loyalty discount..

I'm with Macherry on this one. I worked in the bike industry for about 8 years, and it is very similar to the climbing industry. You don't just go publicly asking for a pro deal on gear. That's lame!!! Shops lose business and dealerships that way. Why is it so urgent that you have a pro deal right NOW anyway?

Lame. Don't do this, especially posting on a forum. Anyone who responds to this with an offer, think about the implications of that action. Companies go out of their way to help those of us out who do have pro deals, and betraying that is a slap in the face to those companies...biting the hand that feeds.

I don't support the gear store in town! I support the gear stores where I go climbing the most (Waterstone Outdoors at the New and Looking Glass Outfitters at Looking Glass).

Who the F#ck resurrected this piece of Sh#t thread and why am I posting to it? It's real easy; get a part time job at a gear store and a real job elsewhere. Part time job wages pay for all your toys at "pro-deal" prices and real job pays the mortgage.

Punk, if you happen to still be listening------YOU ARE A DICK> :D

Agreed, I hope this gets locked.

I still find it hard to belive that the origional post was serious. If you can't get it through work, or personally through the company...your not eligable, so don't spoil it for those who are.

Cheers,
Jim
