We seem to be getting a lot of people talking about getting out on the snow on a few threads. I figured it was time to try to consolidate it to one local. I'm planning on getting out with some of the people who lurk on RC.com. Most notably Skibs.
I'm always looking for backcountry partners, and I am perfectly willing to teach what I know of snow sense to those who want to learn.
So those with the snow Jone'z speak up.

killclimbz, snow is my first love. I love to get out and do the backcountry thing. This will be my third backcountry season, so I have all the gear. There are a few "glaciers" that are producing some turns right now. Hopefully there will be some more snow soon.

Stay in touch. Some turns have been had already on the high passes. It won't be too much longer before we have some decent coverage. I'm down for some adventures.

Winter mountaineering it is with great intensity this year, all the skills and challenges and joys associated with it. I live about 45 minutes from the west entrance of RMNP as well, if that's an enticement to anyone. /Skibs tries hard to conceal her joy, but it's going to be tough, especially when I look out the window at the SNOW COVERED Continental Divide./
Skibs, I am definitely up for some early season action on Berthoud and expanding as the coverage improves. You are the lookout for us Front Rangers, so let us know when the getting is good! :wink:

A couple of friends of mine hiked the mountian up here in Steamboat yesterday and skiied 3/4 of the way down. They said it was close to 24" up on top. It's melting fast... I just looked out the window of my office to see that there is only snow left on the top half of the mountian right now.

Well...never done the back country thing but would love to try. Either way would love to make some turns together w/ ppl from here. Do you exclusively ski bc? Skibabeage, I'm guessin you'll hit the runs at WP once in a while right? :)

Wish I could join you all... tele skiing takes presedence over climbing most days for me, but the snow season is far from beginning here in Va. My goal is to move to colorado eventually when I get out of school. Yall have fun and be safe over there... and most importantly, save some sno for me!!!

If you were directing the backcountry question at me, the answer for this season is going to be yes. Multiple layoffs have left me without the option to buy a pass. I'm hoping to hook up a few days at WP. It's not a bad thing though, the past three seasons I have been doing more BC than resort riding. Backcountry is a blast.

While I'm relegated to weekends because of my work schedule, there are some great runs/acreage that doesn't get that much traffic. There's also Vasquez Cirque, when it's in, that's do-not-fall-here material (so I don't go there because I don't want to fall and die! :wink: )! I also get perks to ski fer free at other select resorts throughout Colorado......so if anyone's interested in heading to Aspen or down to Wolf Creek from time to time, that'd be a hoot.
Come on now, the Cirque ain't that bad. There's not a whole lot of fall and die back there. Trust me, I've fallen all over the place! We should plan a BC trip down to Wolf Creek I hear it's great. I'm also fairly familar with Monarch Pass. Some very fun bc there. Great trees and deep snow.

I don't live on the front range but, I reckin that I'd like to join the club too. Was just looking at the alpenglow making the new snow up on
NY Mtn. sparkle. Kind of got the itch goin...
When the season arrives, please consider giving me a shout... my schedule is fairly convienient and I spend alot of time on snow... BC or liftserved, freeheeled or locked down... its all good. ya can never have too many partners for the BC.
thanx for startin this thread. oh, here's a thought... an rc.com hut trip?
10th Mtn or Alfred Braun system? try that one on for size.

The Skinner Hut might be interesting. If anyone has been there and knows that way that is. I've heard of people getting stuck in a snow storm and doing a forced bivy, only to find out the hut was 40ft away from them.
I know it usually has openings all season, and the terrain around it is supposed to rock. RC.com hut trip sounds like a great idea to me.

I'm not too worried about the avy danger or the hike. Unless it snows a ton we shouldn't have too much danger getting there. As far as the surrounding terrain, good route finding skills, and doing some investigating should do fine. The really big worry is finding the dang hut. I really don't want to do an unplanned bivy.

Write me in for the RC.com hut trip. :D (big sh*t eatin grin) That is a great idea, if we can get enough peeps commited we should reserve a hut and lock in the date. I hear they can be pretty hard to rent certain times of the year.

I know 10th mountain huts fill up, but in all honesty I was looking at going to the Skinner Hut last year in December and there were lots of openings for that hut and one other. The rest were pretty much booked solid. The deciding factor seemed to be is that the other huts are easy to find and have shorter approaches. Thank god for lazy athletes. So let's figure out when we want to go and what days. I'm in the middle of a schedule change so I really don't know what days I will have off. Probably just one weekend day, so I will probably be taking some time. A Sun-Tues trip would be ideal. Get there while everyone is leaving, but that is up to the committe here on if it works or not. I also need to find out what my schedule is anyway, which I should know in about two weeks.
If we get this figured out by mid october we should be good.
Oh yeah mid to late Feb, early March would be the choice time IMO. Jan could be good depending on how the early season goes.

I agree Feb/Mar would make for the best conditions. I can agree on the Skinner hut...what do you other guys/gals think about location and time?

hey, did some turns on the Fair Glacier up by Lone Eagle. Sweet snow up there covering the glacier. Highlyt recommend if you are really hurting for some turns.

I'm guessing I'll need to be a little better than a beginner on blues to do this? :) However - in late season - if I'm making progress - I'm in. The hut to hut trip would be a snowshoe for me as I don't x-c ski or ski at all for that matter. Not that I'm opposed to learning but haven't done it yet.

I say let's go for January, because the season is starting and running early, then if we have a good enough time and conditions are good we can plan another one for March! I'm more than a little hesitant to take on the responbility of planning such a trip, but the snow whore in me says "Do it! Do it!" Jeebus, I need to have my head examined. :wink: Okay, let's start thinking about dates.
