Thanks for your replies. Does anyone here know why the state has deemed it necessary to run an 'ongoing business'? I mean, why would the state need to run a park for profit? Isn't that what taxes are for? Additionally, other than writing letters, is there anything that I can do to help you and others lobby to open Chimney Rock? I've donated my money, and written my letters, I'm psyched to get in there and check things out! Anyone in here know anything about liability insurance? Does the state carry LI on Hickory Nut Gorge State Park? Why is it needed for Chimney Rock? What are the difference between the two insurances (assuming there are two) where one requires certified guides and the other doesn't require a guide at all? I need to put my nose in the computer and figure this out. Lastly, please forgive my frustration while writing my last post. Mark

ok so.....it's been awhile since this thread was active. Let's here the latest. Are real regular (unguided) dirtbag climbers any closer to being allowed to enjoy this state owned resource ? |

Is the an official statement on Chimney Rock available somewhere on the CCC or NC State Parks websites explaining the rationale behind the currently-being-developed access arrangements and also explaining the reasons for the presumed limited to non-existent access by the general public? Could there be?

Remember this thread? Well, there's something you can do about opening the Chimney Rock side of the Hickory Nut Gorge. On Wednesday, May 26th there will be a public planning workshop for Chimney Rock State Park. The workshop will take place at the Municipal Meeting Hall in Lake Lure, NC. Open to the public, the meeting will open from 10 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Any climber that can should drop by sometime during those hours to learn about the State Park Master Plan, meet with State Park staff and the plan consultant, and, most importantly, give input on future park development. The state of North Carolina has commissioned Greenways Inc. to aid in the process. More info is available on their website: http://www.greenways.com/chimneyrock.html Workshop Details Date: Wednesday, May 26th Time: 10 AM to 7 PM (drop-in style) Location: Lake Lure Municipal Meeting Hall Oh, and the Municipal Hall is next to the Marina and the Visitor Center, just south of Boys Camp Rd on NC Highway 9. Please come out and let your voice be heard. There is a lifetime's worth of quality rock in the park. Sincerely, Scott Gilliam Secretary Carolina Climbers' Coalition Join the CCC or renew your membership: Carolina Climbers' Coalition P.O. Box 3327

The Chimney Rock Master Plans are avialable for comment. See below. Let them know you rock climb. Personally I prefer the Intensive Recreation Plan. Though an additionaly visitor center and road seem like a waste of money. I would like to see addtional car camping access, and better access to the north side of Rumbling Bald and to Round Top Mountain (Ghosttown) . . . Feel free to plagarize my comments. Overview of the plans: http://www.greenways.com/downloads/CHROcheatsheet.pdf -- This sheet hits the highlights of the three plans, including naming places that I've never heard of, as well as places that I know have good rock climbing. In order to figure out what's what you may need to consult the three plan documents. Be patient downloading as these files are big. Conservation-Focused Plan: http://www.greenways.com/downloads/CHRO_ConservationFocused.jpg Low Impact Recreation Plan: http://www.greenways.com/downloads/CHRO_LowImpactRecreation.jpg Intensive Recreation Plan: http://www.greenways.com/downloads/CHRO_IntensiveRecreation.jpg Comment form: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s/chimneyrock -- This is the most important thing. After you've looked at the options Greenways are presenting, please give your feedback
