Black Diamond Sponsors HERA for 2005

March 10, 2005 — Black Diamond Equipment Ltd., a global leader in climbing and backcountry gear, has announced its sponsorship of the 4th Annual HERA (Health Empowerment, Research and Advocacy) Ovarian Cancer Climb for Life. Black Diamond will once again host the Salt Lake City event on its campus from September 15-18, and will support the REI Road Tour events by sending world-renowned climbers to conduct climbing clinics, provide climbing tips and raffle off Black Diamond climbing gear.

"Building awareness of Ovarian cancer is critical, and the more women we educate with knowledge of symptoms, the more lives we save," says HERA founder and ovarian cancer survivor Sean Patrick. "Ovarian cancer caught in its early stages has a 90% survival rate, yet only 24% of cases are caught early. If caught late, the chance of five-year survival drops to less than 25%."

Presented by Black Diamond, the HERA Climb for Life REI Road Tour will take place in 16 stores and 39 rock gyms, including: Denver, Bloomington, Encinitas, Seattle, Portland and Fairfax. The event kicks off in Denver, Bloomington, Encinitas and Seattle with a climbing clinic on April 13 at 7 pm, and the climbing weekend following on April 15-17. Portland kicks off on April 14, and the climbing weekend follows from April 15-17. Fairfax kicks off on April 20, with the climbing weekend on April 22-24. Black Diamond is sending Kim Csizmazia to Seattle and Fairfax, Steph Davis to Denver, Tiffany Campbell to Portland, Kitty Calhoun to Bloomington and Heidi Wirtz to Encinitas. Registration begins March 13 at participating REI stores and at http://www.rei.com/climbforlife.

The mission of the HERA Women's Cancer Foundation is to empower women to take control of their health, scientists to seek new directions in ovarian cancer research and communities to provide support. Last year's HERA events raised over $120,000, benefiting research for early detection and new treatments of ovarian cancer. The HERA Foundation is a 501 (c)(3) not for profit organization. 90% of the money raised goes to research, awareness and to provide support. HERA is named for the Greek goddess who was a protector of women and challenger of the status quo. It is also an acronym for Women's Health, Empowerment, Research and Advocacy.
