I'll be in NYC for a week at the end of May. How far is it from NYC to the Gunks? Thanks

How are you planning to get to the Gunks? Driving is a 90 minute trip, but public transportation, which will only take you to the town of New Paltz and no further, might be a bit longer. That trip originates via bus from the Port Authority Bus Terminal on 8th Avenue and 42nd street.

You can also take a MetroNorth Train from Grand Central to Poughkeepsie, then a quick ride across the river on the Arrow Bus to New Paltz. Total time on this route is about 2:15 to New Paltz.

Can anyone recommend some quasi-cheap places to stay in New Paltz? My climbing partner and I are headed out to the Gunks for 5 days over Memorial Day weekend and we're trying to figure out some place to stay. Know the local campground is a bit swampy, so we're looking into room options.

I often take the train, but get a ride from Poughkeepsie to New Paltz and back... how late does the Arrow run from New Paltz to Poughkeepsie in the evening?

The website Tai pointed out is a good start. The cheapest place by far is the New Paltz hostel. Check their website and reserve ASAP. It might be too late already for a holiday weekend (although Memorial Day is not really a busy one at the Gunks for some reason). The Hostel is located right on Main Street in New Paltz and traffic noise (or kitchen noise) can be a bitch. I recommend getting a private room (same price as two single beds but more privacy and a touch quieter). Keep in mind if your a light sleeper, it will be hard to get a good nights sleep at the Hostel. The 10 PM quiet hour is rarely enforced. As for hotels, you might try Poughkeepsie instead of New Paltz. Many more options, better rooms, better rates. About 35-45 minute drive to the Gunks at most. Camping options are either Camp Slime (No facilities, sometimes noisy) or the Multi-use area (minor facilities, ALWAYS NOISY). Both are very near the cliff (walk from Camp Slime, 5 minutes from the MUA). If you want more specifics (such as how to avoid the weekend crowds), feel free to PM. TS

Thanks for all the tips. We managed to get a reservation in at the hostel in New Paltz. Still a bit steep, but memories of the noise level from Camp Slime last time make it worthwhile. 8^)

Honestly, if you know where to camp - legally, I might add - at the MUA, it's quite peaceful. I've only stayed once at the main area, with the circular driveway; it was horrible. Now, I stay on the other side - and have yet to get anything but a peaceful night's sleep. That's where I'll be staying that weekend. For free. Enjoy your trip. :) T
