This could revolutionise the way El Capitan and other big walls are climbed. No more hand hauling!!

"It's a real thrill to climb with," says Cathryn Jacobson, who runs a company called Bonanza Products

"And it's much safer than climbing," she says.

so, is it climbing or not???? :P

anyway, whats the story on ropewear for this devide. id guess its pretty bad. lifing 145kg of load at 1m/s is no small feat.

Not, but if you can get up to the top of El Cap in 10 min...kind of like an elevator.

Hey, wait, I think I saw this already in the movie Vertical Limit! So if it's good enough for Sly....

Only if you're climbing big walls less than 250m tall - otherwise you have to carry extra batteries or something...

Not to mention that you'd still have to get the hauler up to the top of the pitch anyways, and my guess is that it's not the smallest, lightest thing in the world.

In reply to:
One battery charge is enough to scale the Statue of Liberty five times, or 250 metres in total.

One hell of a cannon to throw that much weight up that high, 1/2" line you suppose? 1 long line too, since it probably can't pass a knot.

I gather this device is not very big, if it's ment to attach to your harness.

I never thought about the knot thing. So we are gonna need a 1000 rope...

don't know if you guys actually read the article or not, but nowhere does it say that it can get you up 250 vertical meters in one go. That's how long the battery is good for. for all anyone knows, the rope could just be 1m long and you'ld have to re-anchor it 250 (ok, I'm exaggerating, but you get the idea....)

but.. thats.. not climbing..
first at all, its "lifing", or being drag upwards.. but not climbing. climbing, is when you use your limps to crawl up the wall.

""It's a real thrill to climb with," says Cathryn Jacobson" sorry, laddy.. its not climbing. You get the same feeling being on escalator or elevator. the "real thrill" is when you are hanging 80 feet on the rock, raking your arms, and legs, tryin to place a pro.. now thats a thrill.

Ahh.. a new concept in solo-aid climbing, just add some radio control servos and have the pig haul itself!

so do you shoot the harpoon in the rock with the same type of gun sylvester stallon used in the movie cliffhanger??? and what happens when the batteries run out half way up the way does it still hold its position or does the rope run back through the device as fast just in the opposite direction then when it pulled you up???

I dont really see how this affects regular climbing...
it just lifts you up.

But it could help when your doing a high climb to get you up halfway.

It could also be usefull for if u want to practice one spot on a climb but dont want to waste energy getting there

Otherwise... i dont see the real purpose

My orignal (tounge in cheek) point was this device could be used to haul pigs on multi pitch routes. Haul it up, anchor it and let the rope go through it rather than anchor the rope and have it run up the rope. Basically, a motorised pully. 8^)

Being it's motor-driven, it's illegal above 4700' on the Captain.

Maybe you can get to Sickle. A Dolt Cart would consumate the ensemble.

You can still use the electric one on el cap, could you not?

noticed they are working on a solid fuel propellent version. I'll give 'em one, for a lot less money than they're paying now.

It's called a boot in the ass, now get outta here!

So, are you not allowed to have electricity above 4700'?

Now I haven't read the article, nor I have been to the Statue of Liberty, but I'm pretty damn sure that the Statue is more than 50 meters tall...

this would be useful for a photographer to take a shot from half way up the wall. also, the statue of liberty is extremely small compared to what it you would think i was pretty disappointed when i went to NYC 2 weeks ago
