Do these things work as well as the Halogen style? How about battery life?

I have a friend with one that we used to walk out from a climbing spot at night. It worked great and didn't seem to dim in the time that we had it on. We used it steady for about 20-30 minutes. I am not sure how fresh the batteries were when we started, but they seemed to do fine for that period of time.

I have used mine for a bunch of months now, on-and-off a few times a month.

I'm still on my first set of batteries, and no noticeable dimming.

The BD moonlight has a runtime of 70 hours of useable light (useable light being defined as "You can see the bottom of your pack, or you can see your feet climbing, or you can set up a rapell/rescue")

I've got the Petzl Tikka, love it & the batteries last for ages. I even went caving with it, no probs, plenty of light.

LED headlights kick ass, they don't have a strong beam like halogen lamps but they're not supposed to anyway, battery life is above 70 hours for most models, I have had the BD moonlight for 3 months and I still haven't changed the batteries, I use it all the time and due to the small size and nearly unnoticeable weight I take it everywhere, even if I'm driving at night. they work fine for night trekking.

where climbing is concerned... LED headlamps are great, I've climbed at night with mine on and didn't have any trouble. don't expect to see too far though, I wouldn't trad with that thing on.

Battery life is great. I've used a little Petzl headlamp for quite some time without replacing the batteries.

I find that the headlamp is great for close work (bouldering, reading, on the trail). Where it is wanting, is when you need to look beyond 10 or so feet. For example, on a trail at night, it works great for what is right at your feet, but looking ahead to decide which way to go doesn't work.

I swear by it for night bouldering. Batteries last "forever" and you barely know that you have it on.

I really like mine, the best part is the angle of the lamp is adjustable and it has 5 settings, no other lamp has the 5 settings and the Petzel is not adjustable...

No one has mentioned this yet, so...
They don't work so well in snow. If you are leading on a glacier at night it is better to have a traditional headlamp. When we climb on a glacier now, we make sure we have at least one traditional headlamp for the team.

I just bought the Black Diamond Gemini headlamp about two montha ago. I have used it almost every weekend. The specs of the headlamp say that the LED light has 1000 hrs. of light from only 3 AAA batteries. The bonus of the Gemni is that it also has a halogen bulb in it, this way you can switch back and forth with ease.

I have a tikka and a buddy of mine has a tikka we both have had problems with it dimming. If you tap it goes back to normal most of the time. He actually took his back and got another one and it does the same thing. Its a great light weight light for the pack....I would not buy another petzl tikka I would probably try a Black Diamond if I got another one not to mention that you can adjust that one. I do have a Zoom though and love it.

I have the Zipka, and use it to lead Trad routes at night at J-Tree. Plenty of light, and lasts much longer than the halogen lamps. I've used mine for 3 months quite a bit on the same batteries.

I have a BD Gemeni (LED and Halogen) and love it! I also have an LED light on my keychain, which sees more use than all my oither flashlights combined! The only disadvantage to these white LED's is that they don't throw light very far. They light up a wide angle, though, so they are ideal to seeing things close to where you are. The best thing about them is that the light is much whiter than bulbs, so you don't really need as much and things are clearer.

I tend to use the halogen bulb for actual climbing and the LED for everything else. I love having both. I want the BD Spaceshot with the voltage regulator, though. Man that would be nice!

I guess I am a gearhead.

I have the Petzl Tikka headlamp. I love it, better than My halogen because battery life is 70 hours and the bulb life is 7 yrs. It can clip directly into my helmet, and when I vertically decend into caves, Its great to fit into a small space and provide great lighting. I hihgly reccomend them

I love my Tikka, xcept I wish it had a dimmer setting. Sometimes camping with it, its like a big headlight, its so strong But its great for night climbing and its strong enough that you can use it to point out stuff to the climber up to about 15-20 feet

i have the zipka. quite fun... very very bright. i made the accident of looking into the light and was blinded for some time. it's great... hasn't dimmed at all....

i even used it to set up a tent for the first time in the pitch dark! unfortunately the flies really liked the light.... but all was okay.

I've led, rapped, and downclimbed the friction route at Tahquitz many times with my Petzl Tikka. It is a little dim for the trail, but I can personally attest that it is infinitely better than staggering down hill in search of the Ernie Max trail by moonlight!

I like it so much, I bought a Zipka to keep in my pack as a spare (for less prepared partners).

I have 2 Tikka's and one has that "on/off" problem. I think the case gets a little warped or something. You can sqeeze on the case and it comes back on. I know several other people with this problem (backpackers mostly). Know one guy with a wiring problem on the moonlight. I compared beams with a climber with a Gemini and it seems to focus the beam better, little more distance, plus being able to switch to halogen on the fly.

the LED headlamps are the way to go. They are getting lighter and smaller all the time. Go to
www.ems.com and check out the Black Diamond Ion.
It is an E.M.S. excusive item at this time so you won't find it anywhere else! The batteries last forever in the led lamps.
