Hey guys and gals, I was wondering if anyone knows of a way that you can simulate the effect of a Polarizing filter with Photoshop. Example I have some shots from a bike race that were shot in low light. I couldn't afford to lose the stops by using my polarizer. So now I have it scanned and in Photoshop trying to bring out the colours more without ruining the image. thanks

Curves to increase contrast and boost/darken blue in the sky. Avoid cast that you sometimes get from a real pol. filter Selectively tone-down highlights/glare. That's harder, but it can be done. I use adjustment layers with a mask. Your mileage may vary.

I typically use "Image, Adjust, Auto Levels" Seems to work on most occasions... particularly with shots from my digital camera. But it has been known to take on more color in the blue and green range on some shots... Good Luck.

Thanks guys, I wasn't sure if there was filter or something that mimicked the effect exactly. Autolevels and levels seem to be the key. Thanks again BTW Jeff, this is in the Photography section, and I'm dealing phtotographs, climbing photographs at that, so I felt it safe to ask....

Adjust -> Variations is also a good interface to get your pic pretty close to where you want it if you're not intimately familiar with all the nuances of Photoshop and digital color models.
