I was climbing at Old Rag on Sunday (4/24/11) and stopped by the Summit Wall on the way out to do few routes. On the hike down I found a string with flags and a sign blocking the path right at the base of Groovy. The sign said the "trail" was closed to protect animal habitats but didn't mention specifics. I didn't see any other signs stating what animal species or making a distinction between trail and cliff closure.

Anybody know anything. I've spent the last 20 min. searching online and haven't come up with anything.

Subject: Shenandoah NP Old Rag Mtn Dead Tree Wall and Summit Crag Wall
Climbing Area Temporary Closure
From: John_Buchheit@...

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Dear Shenandoah National Park area climbing community and others:

Due to Peregrine Falcon nesting activity occurring in the area of the Dead
Tree Wall climbing site on Old Rag Mountain, The Dead Tree Wall and the
Summit Crag Area are temporarily closed to climber and other recreational
use from now until early summer.

The Park needs your help to avoid disturbing Peregrine Falcons nesting in
the area. Disturbances could cause the peregrines to abandon their
nesting site. The Superintendent has closed the area of Dead Tree Wall
and Summit Crag under the authority of Title 36, Section 1.5 of the Code
of Federal Regulations. The Peregrine Falcon is protected by State law.
Harassing, pursuing, killing, capturing or attempting to engage in any
such conduct is illegal and subject to a fine.

Dead Tree Wall and Summit Crag areas are not readily accessible nor a
destination site for hikers on Old Rag. The Park is depending on the
cooperation of the local climbing community to help get the word out to
other climbers to help protect the nesting area. Signs have been posted
at trail access areas to the Old Rag trails and at the climber social
trail to Dead Tree Wall and Summit Crag Chute. Please contact me (at the
contact information below) or Rolf Gubler, Park Biologist at
rolf_gubler@... if you have questions.

Thank you for your cooperation and assistance,

John Buchheit

Thank you sir. I've heard some talk over the years of peregrines at Old Rag but never seen anything specific about closures.

Thanks again.
