I have spent most of my time in the gym and now I am ready to go out in the "real world." What is a good out door rope for climbing in North TX/OK? I have read that 60m is the standard now, but what about thickness -- 10.5 or 11.0? Is there a good brand I should look at, or more importantly a brand to stay away from? Thanks in advance... ---- Joshua A. Brandt, Airman First Class, USAF

do a forum search on ropes. I've heard much praise for Bluewater if money is no object. Edelweiss is also top-o-da-line and can be found for cheaps if you look on the net long enough. Check out www.gearexpress.com for deals. People usually recommend a 10.5 for a first rope. I think a 10.2 is prime if you know how to handle a rope, but it is still your first. Anything smaller and you should be specific with the type of climbing you use it for. Any thicker and you Might have trouble flowing it through your belay device and/or clipping it. A 10.2 or 10.5 is durable and very multi-purrpose. When buying a rope, also look at the number of falls it can take, and the weight per meter for comparrison shopping. Oh yea, do a forum search!!!
