You mentioned you're bringing your four year old. Most of the climbing areas that so crowed you can't breathe are quite a hike uphill (taking into consideration you're going on a holiday weekend) . They call it the red river gorge, but it isn't really a gorge. The climbing areas are for the most on top of hills and a drive in between. My ex had a 5 year and I can say the hike can be a strain on a little one. Otherwise, it's awesome climbing.

hmmm, so it sounds like the weather's bearable, or am i mistaken? our home turf is devil's lake, so we're used to the humidity and the hike. (even though cole will just be 4 next monday, last weekend he hiked up and down the CCC trail twice and then climbed 3/4 the way up a 5.6...is the red that much more demanding? he's hardcore. ) we're heading to the minnesota gathering tomorrow, then planning on leaving for our next trip the following monday or tuesday. (i'm a teacher, so i make use of the summer vacation, can you tell? :D ) so, any other helpful beta? anyone going to be there? thanks all. jen

I'd say that since you are going to be there during the week you should be able to get out and get on about anything you want. And the hikes really aren't that bad for the most part, but watch out for snakes. Again, this year they seem to be out in force. If you want to do some research on routes and crags (I don't know if you've ever been there before) you can check www.redriverclimbing.com. There is a really cool searchable online guidebook that will allow you to specify about any criteria that you want and it will give you a list of matching climbs. And at this point other than word of mouth it is the only place to find out about a lot of the new climbs.

I'm a little biased about dryer weather as I don't like tent camping much in wet/hot weather. However, I would recommend going to the Red over Devil's Lake almost under any circumstance imaginable. If you chopped all the routes in half and had to battle snakes, crowds (way less during the week),hornets,a long drive, hillbillys etc the Red would still be a better place to visit . Go for it

So far, the weather is looking good for the 4th weekend. I will say this... it will be busy. I try and stay as far away from the Red as possible on Memorial Day, the 4th, and Labor Day (not as busy, seeing as how it's hot/humid as h___ then). Good move going during the week... you'll be able to get a few days of climbing in before the croud shows up. It is the best climbing around here... especially if you can get good weather. josh

thanks for all the info, y'all. i've decided to go to the red this week, and then hit new river gorge in august. i did post at redriverclimbing.com, so it looks like i should be able to find a climbing partner or two during the week. (but hey, if you see a blazer with wisconsin plates at miguel's, that's us. :D ) i'm hoping to get as much climbing in during the week as possible - i do have relatives in lexington, so if the weather or the crowds become unbearable, i may escape there for some family time. take care, jen
