anyone own one? How well does it work on waterfall ice? Do you think you could get away with a Raptor and a Charlet Pulser on grade 3 ice?

I have one , works okay I use the reg curve pick (but do have the tech recurve pick just never bothered to use it) Ive done the regular mods to my pick, It sticks good and have climbed grade 3 ice using just my raptor general tool. (quite a few times Ive done this actually) Ive also climbed grade 4 ice with my raptor and my mini camp 3rd tool (done for the practice) I can comfortably climb grade 3 ice with the raptor and one of my grivel geronimo II's (straight shafts) My DMM is 65cm (the longest available) I find for me 5'11" it is barely long enough but I do like it just fine when we get on steeper terrain. Only complaint is that the head vibrates a little bit but its fairly solid , keep your head bolts properly torqued. hope that helps. cheers

Vituarly every grade 3 ice climb was done before you were probobly born with gear that would make you crap your pants so it is a safe bet that any modern toll will be more than sufficient for the task 8)

In reply to: Do you think you could get away with a Raptor and a Charlet Pulser on grade 3 ice? I've climbed WI 3 with one dull mountaineering axe... And I've seen others climb WI 5 with similar "equipment". I've also seen others doing strange things that can barely be described as climbing on 60 degree ice with a pair of Cobras. It's all about individual comfort levels, eh. Now, I think the question - after all that - should have been "can I climb with the aforementioned tools?" And only you can answer that one.

I guess my question is more does the Raptor with the technical pick work anywhere as good as a "real" ice tool. If I climb like this, am I going to want another real tool in a short amount time?

I have to laugh when I here people who are climbing 3's and 4's (like myself) wonder what the best tool is. The truth is it's not the tool it's your skills that are holding you back. Any modern tool is gonna work but with the price of climbing gear it's nice to get something that works a little better or is made better then the others.

In reply to: I guess my question is more does the Raptor with the technical pick work anywhere as good as a "real" ice tool. IMO, the Raptor is a "real" ice tool... perhaps not the best one around, but it's no Pterodactyl...
In reply to: If I climb like this, am I going to want another real tool in a short amount time? Probably, but what the hell do I know, I've been going through ice tools like Don Juan does the ladies. Want to buy a pair of Vipers? DM

Some tools work well for some people, and others blow. IT all depend son your swing and what you like. Try them then buy them.
