a few people are meeting up there from out of town and before we go up, does anyone know if these are still open? I'm thinking it's closed as it's outside of Murrin, Chief and Shannon Falls. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

From a CASBC mailout:

"Virtually all the cliffs in Whistler Rockclimbs (Cheakamus Canyon north) are on forest or park land, and it is safest to assume they are closed."

and

"CalChek: This area, partly reached from a provincial park, is closed."

I spoke to a Ranger this weekend and Shannon Falls is also closed down. Your best bet is probably to call Valhala Pure in Squamish 604-892-9092 to see what the most recent closures are. You should sign up for a patrol while you're at it.

I was in Murrin on Aug 31, the first day the parks guys posted no smoking signs. I was leaving and saw a woman unloading her kids and a cigarette hanging from her mouth. The guy I was with told her there's no smoking in the area. She was so indignant about the whole thing... she said, "I'll carry a cup of water with me"  .

I read in the paper that they're starting to fine people who go against the restrictions. Something like $250 for being where you shouldn't and $350 for smoking where you shouldn't. Hopefully she gets a nice ticket someday.

I was in the grand wall boulders on Saturday and it started raining. There were cheers throughout the boulders. Kind of cool.
