Hi,
My family has begun to refer to me as the son with the climbing disorder, due to the fact that all I seem to do is geared in one way or another to climbing.I don't think there is anything wrong with that,or am I in "Denial".Sure beats some of the previous things I was obsessive about, and a lot healthier.Does anyone else have this problem?

I'm tring to balance climbing in my life. It was really messing with my Chi. Now I'm starting to get a better better balance of climbing, running, and my studies.

I'm getting so bad my best friend wanted to visit me this weekend but asked, "You're not going to ditch me to go climbing, are you?" To which I actually had to stop and think.

When it gets to the point where its like I've got a boyfriend I'm dumping my friends for, it's getting bad. Yikes.

I know what you mean. Since I started climbing three years ago I have spent almost a year climbing in Asia and another three months road tripping in the States! When I am at home, I teach courses at the gym and spend the rest of the time climbing or studying (I am the worlds oldest student). My girlfriend climbs too. I almost never see my old friends anymore (the ones that dont climb)- but I have managed to get some of them out to the crags a couple of times!

I stopped mountain biking until recently, and I used to go out a lot more at night. Still, I think that I am way happier now than I was before. I have more in common with my climbing friends than I do with most other people. Maybe I am in denialb too- I have been there before... but climbing IS better than cocaine, right?

All i do is climb. I used to go out, but if you ask me now...I'll say i can't. I have to wake up at 6 to get the first sunrise climb.

My friends do respect me though and understand. I'm glad they do cause they don't take it personally anymore like they used to do.
I've got new climbing friends, better than ever. We're on the same frequency.
My Parents...well, now they are finaly (after more than a year) starting to encourage my climbing obsession.

It takes time for friends and relatives to adjust.

But like jcs says "It's better than cocaine, right?"

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for your responses. Now I don't feel as though I am going overboard on this(too much anyhow).I too have met a lot of nice folks climbing that I consider to be my friends,I've never met a bunch of people more eager to help me improve at what I'm doing. As a whole I think the climbing "society" are a great bunch.
Climbing is SO much better than "coke".
Thanks again for your encouragement,NOW I MUST CLIMB!!!!

You should read the book "kiss or kill a confession of a serial climber". The author has the exact same problem.

I have this disorder also, my family is dealing with it ok. I got to see just how bad I had it when on vacation last summer I had my whole family + 2 sisters and thair families on the side of a road in Indiana top roping on the cut out. Now whenever I'm planning vacations I'm looking for ways to include climbing, my wife does a lot od eye rolling.

The book is written by Mark Twight. Awesome book. Kinda of hard to get a hold of right now the publisher is working on a reprint.

Hi,
I know what you mean fo_od,I went with my son and his girl and a date to NYC recently and HAD to take my climbing shoes and chalk bag. We(my son and I) simply had to do some bouldering in the park. They thought this was a little extreme, next time THEY stay home. When we are planning a family outing,I am always looking for spots in the area to climb. We went to a camping trip in W.Va. and had to go to Harpers Ferry to see the quaint town, gee, is that a cliff there? They almost believed it was a coincedence me and my son HAPPENED to have our gear with.Just goes to show.

I get up at 5:00 A.M. twice a week to climb because the rest of my time is taken with work and family. Climb or Sleep? I choose sleep. Plus it's not as expensive as coke!
