Compared to you "normal sports" all climbing is a extrime sports. In my oppion (SP) Free soloing and high ball bouldering are extrime sports compared to roped climbing/

yeah i suppose i would call it an extreme sport. doesnt matter if its roped or not. thats like saying skydiving is an extreme sport only if you dont wear a reserve chute with your main chute. so either way, yes i would call climbing an extreme sport.

Must we label everything?

Climbing is climbing. Good enough for me.

CLIMBING IS NOT AN EXTREME SPORT(for me, anyway). It is a Religion. But for most other climbers I see out there on the rocks these days, CLIMBING IS AN EXTREME SPORT. This makes me ill of course.
I think we should ban anyone who uses the word "Extreme" from buying climbing gear. We already ban them from having High IQs....

im no pepsi max boy. i just dont see anything wrong with people considering climbing an extreme sport. sure to some its a religion, to others its just spiritual, and to some its just a sport. its all a matter of opinion.

Climbing can be extreme, but for me it isn't a sport. As far as I'm concerned, in order for something to be a sport it must involve competition. I don't compete when I'm climbing. I climb for myself. I think that climbing to compete is totally different than climbing for yourself. There is a different motivation involved.

He doesn't call himself an Adrenaline Junky-- it is the name designated by the number of posts he has made. Click on the words "Adrenaline Junky" (or the label under anyone else's name, for that matter) and you'll get an idea of what I'm talking about.

Kaptk - Im not sure if you know it but I really think your a joke trying to say inorder for climbing to be a sport you must compete against one another. Well have you ever herd or bouldering circuts or climbing circuts were the point of every meet is a comp, what are those? Correct me if im wrong, but would those not be sports in you logic? Get you facts stright befour you talk, Jack off!!

Climbing is extremely fun, extremely enjoyable, extremely great way to get away from worldly stress, and extremely hard work. That's why I love it so much.

And climber chicks are EXTREMELY HOT!!!

P.S. The post above mine should have been dealt with in PM. Personal attacks are not needed in the forums.

I don't think it is an extream sport, but people that stand off on the side and watch people climb think it is.

Well, it all comes at the end to your definition of EXTREME SPORT.
Of course, Climbing is a VERY dangerous sport, and many climbers die every year. It is, without any doubt, among the most dangerous sports.
So, if EXTREME means DANGEROUS, i would agree labeling climbing an EXTREME SPORT.
Of course, there are many climbing modalities, each one having its own risk level.
For instance, one thing is to climb in a gym, and another completely different thing, and obviously MORE MORE dangerous (and extreme) is to try to ascend mount "Fitz Roy".

Just my 2 cents

Is climbing extreme?

The word extreme could be associated with 'attitude'.

One way of looking at it is that you could say it depends on the level you take it too, the attitude with which you can climb.

Some people are happy to just climb within their limits, to climb with no real pressure on their physical and mental abilities. They get their enjoyment just by being on the rock, climbing within their own comfort zone, although it should be remembered with climbing there is always risk regardless.

On the other hand many climbers will climb to their limit and above, then the sport in itself becomes more extreme as they are taking it to another level. To a level where it will test their mental and physical abilities and there is a greater possibility of failure.

The rock could be seen as a source of challenges and tests and its about whether you've got the determination and attitude to want to take that test or whether to stay on a level or in the comfort zone where you know you will be ok.

Either way .. as long as you enjoy it, thats all that matters.

I kinda think Stig's on the right track here. IMHO there are no "extreme" sports but rather each sport can have it's extremes. As an example, a few years ago Brazil was knocked out of footballs World Cup by an 'own goal'. When the offending Brazilian player returned home he was shot to death in the airport. Now would you call football (soccer to N.Americans) an extreme sport, probably not but this incident certainly shows an extreme within the sport.
So to what extreme do you take your climbing? To each their own; extremly comfortable or extremely intense?

I think its certainly an extreme sport as well as kayack, paintball, white water, skydiving ect. Extreme to me is radical and new. Football, soccer...all too common.

Dude, if I think that vegging in my room watching T.V. is an extreme sport, then I don't even know WHAT climbing would be categorized as!

I was thinking about this question today.

I think climbing is a extrime sport to those who dont do it. I mean we who climb lear and know safty so why consider it extreme. I think highball bouldering and free soloing are the only forms of extrime climbing because there is very little safty that you can do with these.

When I was thinking about this question I got thinking when I was younger I was big into BMX racing and dirt jumping, I broke almost every bone possiable except the majyor ones, now thinking im like what was wrong with me,I think now thats more of a extrime sport then climbing but at the time, I felt it was a totally normal sport.

The word extreme to me has been way too commercialized. The whole x-games thing. Skateboarding? Extreme? I don't friggin think so. Skydiving...extreme. Free-soloing...extreme. Skiing down 55 degree slopes...extreme.

X-games

Just my 2 cents

Off course climbing is an extreme sport. Why do you think its in the X-treme Games. Your adrenaline rush kicks in when you climb high. Bouldering, to my opinion, isn't as extreme as high climbing.
