I would like to go climbing in Germany this summer (august), but the only place Ive heard about is Frankenjura if anyone can tell me other nice places in the south (near austria or switzerland).. I would also like to know if it is too warm to climb there in summer. Thank you very much.

The're lots of other climbing areas in Germany. An overview You can find here: www.on-sight.de/gebiete Unfortunately all the descriptions are in German. Sorry! The Frankenjura is a good place in Summer. The most rocks there are in the shade of trees. In all other areas it depends from the weather if it's to hot or not. In a really hot summer perhaps it's better to climb in the alps.

I have heard that the Elbesandgebirge are a rush. You climb sandstone spires and leap from one to another. If you go a little farther east into the Czech republic and/or Poland you get to the Tatra mountains. People get tears in their eyes when they talk about climbing there. It must be good. I think there is also some limestone sport climbing in the south. You need to be a little careful climbing in European countries because they tend to require that you be certified to climb, and have a permit to be on the route you are on.

The hassle with permits is mostly belgium. Climbing in germany isn't a problem in many places, except nideggen. For trad climbing you could go to the Sudpfalz, but that's a few hours from switzerland (about 3 i guess) But in Germany there's no speedlimit on most highways  I've climbed in the Sudpfalz myself. Very beautiful landscape. Red sandstone towers towering out above the surrounding forest. I'ts a very green area. Also good bouldering there. Send me a PM/mail if you want more info on the sudpfalz. Hopefully I'm going to the Frankenjura in may :D

The being certified to be on a particular route I have never heard of. I know Germany doesn't require anything like that (at least on sport routes), do you happen to know which countries might? One note about the Elbsandsteingebirge: if you dont know how to protect a lead using knotted cord/slings/rope/etc, take someone with you who does! Standard pro (nuts, cams, hexs, etc) is not allowed and the bolts can be reeaallyy spaced out (in the early years a route wouldn't even be accepted as having a first accent if any of the bolts that were used were within 3 meters of each other).
