I am going to be climbing in the Gunks this Friday, June 18th. What are you guys wearing this time of year? Do you need layers for different times of the day? I am based in So. Cal., so any and all  would be great. Thanks.

In reply to: I am based out of Los Angeles, and usually climb in So Cal, but I am visiting my family in New York in a few weeks, and will have the Friday of June 18th to hit the world famous hot spot. It has become clear that if I am really going to get the full experience, I need to do the trad routes. The problem, I have hardly ANY trad experience. I lead West coast (i.e. graded easier) sport routes at about 5.10c, shut up and listen when people are trying to teach me things, and will consider your safety before my enjoyment at all times. I plan to get at least one or two trad practice outings in before I make the trip, so if you are interested, e-mail me directly at NonUnionAD@bigfoot.com. Let me know what you would charge for the day, what your experience with climbing/teaching might be, and that you can get away for the whole day without fail. If you work in the film industry in Manhattan it would be especially good, we can swap contacts and such. Thanks. -Jolyon Reese heh looser

The gunks is all trad, so if you want to get off the ground your going to be doing trad routes. Enjoy your trip, the gunks kick ass!

I would suggest hiring a guide. Only a few are allowed to guide at the Gunks and they are listed on www.gunks.com I hired Diamond Sports a couple of years ago and the guide was great. They are at www.gunksguide.com Enjoy. Chris

Don't pay for it (except in beer and gear hauling); anyone who would accept money for such a thing isn't worth paying. Unless of course your extremely desperate. Extremely.

Ignore the tools that are sneering. Then, look HERE. I've hired guides from Diamond, Alpine Endeavors, and High Angle Adventures; all are first-rate. Stay away from EMS, as they tend to be more expensive. T

I heartily second that which Taino has said!!!! The BEST money I EVER spent was for a 4 day intensive trad climbing seminar in Joshua Tree. My husband and I learned more in four days than your friends can teach you in four years...you will NOT regret investing in this. After all, the wrong beta on placing gear can cost you dearly (and I'm not talking about the cost of replacing gear  ) sj65

Give Diamond Guides a call... Paul Curran is a great guy. Worth the money to learn the right way, rather than pick up someone else's wrong/bad habits for beers or for free... Have fun.
