Climbed only a couple of times indoors and once outdoors. Always with guide. Since the last climb, have been itching to do it again. Want to make this regular maybe once or twice a week. Only problem is I don't know where to start. Looking to start climbing in BRG but I have no ride and I live in Boston-Back Bay area. Any advice on where to go, and what to do is very much appreciated. If there's anyone who wouldn't mind giving me a ride to BRG from the Boston-Backbay area would be great too. Regards!

Hey Butter, The mass climbers thread is ongong (over 500 pages), and we get together pretty often in differrnt groups to climb both indoors and out (this time of year, mostly outdoors). Here's a link to the thread, leave a message there, and you'll hear all about the local happenings, and also whether anyone is available for rides, etc. Good luck, welcome to climbing, and rc.com. http://www.rockclimbing.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=25768

Hey David, Sounds great! When do you normally go? I'm still really new to this and am now shopping around for equipment(Harness, shoes, chalkbag, etc). I actually signed up for the intro course at BRG this Sat at 9am, they won't let me climb alone without doing the course. Is that a good idea? Gerald

Gerald Hey Butter, I run a small climbing program at the Cambridge YMCA in Central Square (you can get there via the T). I teach every Tuesday evening. You don't need to have a harness or shoes. I teach you the safety basics of toproping - both how to climb, and how to belay. Then you get to climb! It's free for Y members, and $10 for non-members. Drop me a note, and I'll give you the details. Oh, and after you're done with me, you won't need to take the BRG class, you'll have all the fundamentals you need. GO

Hey cracklover, that sounds good. I basically need to pass the BRG test, so that I can climb the walls. This is what they need To qualify for a safety test you must be able to demonstrate with *experience and proficiency the following: The ability to properly put on a harness Tie a figure of eight knot in a blank climbing rope Tie into your harness at the correct tie in points with a retraced figure of eight knot, backed up by a double fisherman's knot Set up a conventional belay device, such as an ATC (we don't test on GriGri's), show proper belay technique, and catch an unannounced climber fall * Experience and proficiency means that the person taking the test must be able to complete the test without any prior practicing in the gym, or on the gym's premises. If your course would cover all that would be great. You can email me personally with the details butterboxes@verizon.net
