1/16 rule or sunny 16 rule or what ever name you want to call it. it pretty much means that on a bright sunny day under normal conditons anywhere from 2 hours after sunrise to 2 hours before sunset the correct expose for anything in the sun is f16 @ your ISO. so if you have 100 speed film the correct exposure for anything in the sun is f16 @ 1/125 sec, 400 speed film its f16 @ 1/400 sec and so on. here are some other variations on the rule for not sunny times: f16 @ ISO - bright sun and dark shadows under normal conditions f11 @ ISO - hazy overcast and light shadows f8 @ ISO - overcast and no shadows f5.6 @ ISO - subject in open shade (nothing above it) f2/2.8 @ ISO - subject in closed shade there's a bunch of others for different situations but try these out.
