i don't think it really matters, but if it does i'm sure someone will correct me. however i always go up then follow through my figure 8. it's easier for me to thread up than it is to thread down. not sure why it's easier, just feels right

Danx The person that taught you the knot is a fool. Learn from somebody else

Danx wrote: ...I was taught to tie it top > bottom because I was told if you take a big lead fall then there is less chance of it flipping you... clc is right. find yourself someone who knows what they're talking about. a bight through a harness is a bight through a harness no matter which way you pass it, and it CERTAINLY will not flip you. the only thing that's potentially "flipped" is the knot and that doesn't even matter (especially considering its relative symmetry). as long as you can tie it right, then it'll hold just fine. the only way that knot will only flip you if it's behind your leg when you take that whipper.

In the beginning focus on 'dressing' the initial figure-8 knot well and don't worry so much about how the knot is finished - any of the typical finishes are fine.

Danx wrote: Hi All, What is the best way to tie in to a harness. After the initial figure 8 knot should you thread the rope from top > bottom or bottom > top before tying the follow through. Thanks It doesn't matter, either way it's just a loop.

That wasn't his question. He was asking whether you feed the rope up from the bottom or down from the top of the tie-ins. The answer: It doesn't matter. But, if he did ask that question, you would be correct. Josh

Ah, misread the question in a quick scan - yes, find someone else to learn from - really.

Maybe if you forget to tie your top tie in loop you can flip around... was that what he was trying to say?

Kartessa wrote: Maybe if you forget to tie your top tie in loop you can flip around... was that what he was trying to say? ah-HA! I think we have a winner for thoughtful responses! [or maybe i'm just impressed because i didn't think of it]. Danx: as far as the original question goes, it absolutely does NOT matter which way you pass your rope through your harness loops, as long as you go through BOTH loops (waist and legs) as kartessa so aptly pointed out. if you only go through legs, then yes, it'll spin ya. but that would be a separate issue that would need to be immediately addressed under a different, and far more consequential, category (like double-checking everything) than which direction the rope goes.
