Hey,
I live in central PA so I'm half way between both. I don't currently have a climbing partner so I haven't been climbing much and would love to start getting out again. I have knowledge about many central PA areas and would love to check out some new ones and I don't mind a bit of travel. PM me if interested.

I never seem to get much of a response from this part of the state. Where do you climb in wpa. I climb at McConnells mills, Lisbon, Ohio, The Connellsville area, Coopers, Seneca/Nelsons, NRG, and Bellfonte. I climb most weekends and try to climb as much of the year as possible. I live 35 min. from Mcc mill.

I live in Pittsburgh and have a pretty solid set of climbing partners, but I'm always up for meeting and climbing with new people.

Yes I climb with the ECP and a group out of Pitt (where I graduated from). Lately I've been doing more with the ECP though.
Are you involved with them?

I thought your name was familiar. I'm an ecp member but don't climb with them alot. I may have met you at the mill on wed nite. I have been to seneca with them a cpl times. I've also climbed with Phil Sidel and some of the pitt outdoor club before.
I also have a group, mostly from pittsburgh, that I climb with, but am always willing to go with someone new or take someone out. This is not the best time of year to get something like this rolling but having access to partners would be nice.

I asked Phil to make this a sticky so it wouldn't get lost. Now we have a place to find partners, vent, fall in love or hate, all the things we need to do! So big thanks to our Aussie friend.

'bout time we got a forum started. I live in Hershey and will pretty much drive to climb anywhere. At the moment i'm going to school in Montana but this spring and summer i'll be up for some climbing.

Here's an idea. Anytime we go climbing, post it here with a contact# so our central PA friends (and anyone else) have a way to participate.
Charly, if you're going to climb, post it here and invite everyone to join you. Who knows who'll show.
ECP members, post climbing trips on here, but spell out any restrictions or costs.
As more poeple share their climbing information, imagine how fine our climbing will be!
However, if it's a real cozy twosome, and three's a crows, just PM me the details later please.

What a great idea and many thanks for your time and energy getting it going. Ice season is coming, let's share our plans and make a community of this.
Trip reports are a great idea too. I think people would like to read them. I see 140 people have viewed this thread but only a few local climbers have chimed in. Let's go, we've got to catch those Mass climbers.

Derry High Rocks is closed. The local Access fund was doing some work (along with the ECP) to work out something wiht the title holder that would allow climbing there.
There is some debate as to who actually holds the title to the land (there are at least two potiential owners) but both have stated that they do not want anyone trespassing on their land.
If you want more information I could forward your email address to the ECP project head for this and ask her to fill you in.

it is a shame about derry high rocks. i always thought that if we climbers could organize a "clean up day" and actually make efforts to clean up these peoples property, they might be a little more prone to giving access to climbers. i know that the local VFW's and rescue services teach alot of ropes classes up there and rescue classes, so there is a chance of workingh something out, lets stay posted on derry, what a wondeful climbing area.

Thanks for that Derry info. My experience is that small parties continue to climb there without incident, but if a large party asks permission, even for a worthy project such as a cleanup, they're told no.
Another pet peeve. When can we get some bolts at Coopers? Why must we kill every tree and trample the underbrush to toprope the Sunset Wall, when a handful of bolts would fix the problem.
It just seems that the climbing community cannot get their act together. Any thoughts on this subject?

Happy to come aboard.
I plan to start at "The Climbing Wall" in January to get back in some kind of shape. Will be looking for partners (not keen on bouldering). Toproping outside when weather turns reasonably warm and dry. Will be with POC on their Spring Seneca trip and will be much involved with ECP Rock School in late April and May.
If I don't get in much better climbing condition, I will not try leading any more. An unexpected leader fall on an easy climb last month warns me that it is probably time to step back from the sharp end.

Hi,
I wish someone would put some bolts above the most climbed routes in Coopers. Maybe over the top a couple inches so they're not visible from the trail, but close enough that you snap 2 quickdraws, clip your short raope, and you're rigged. Why can't this be done before all the trees are dead, and we're forced to do it anyway.
I thought climbers were enviroment loving people, so what's the problem?
I'll tell you the problem. Somebody was dry tooling at McConnells Mill, on a route called many thing, like ROTC Block, Rapple Block. and pulled off a key hold. I've worked and worked but can't get through it. Isn't there enough choss to play on, or did you want to ruin a great route? Why didn't you glue it back on? What is up with you guys?
I see 300 views, but nobody is posting. Use or lose it. Why would anybody check to see what's happening if it's dry and dusty.
Just a few thoughts.

The route with the missing hold at the mill has been climbed by some but sure not me. I still can't do the easy var.
I just got back from a weekend at Seneca. The climbing was fine. It was cold except when in direct sun and when the wind blew it was cold. It rained last night and this morning so I left early. 44' with little wind is ok to climb in. 50 with wind is cold but doable. There were no waiting lines on anything. :lol:

hey ya'll, wonder if you would let someone from wv join in with you. my family is from aliquippa and i wouldnt mind doing some climbing in wpa when i am home. kind of laid out at the moment due to a motorcycle accident, but hoping to get back on the rock in jan.

Mellow? Pop? I haven't even started warming up.
I met a guy named Rob this summer, who thinks every rock in the area is his personal property, and believes he has a right to chop any bolt he finds. I even heard about him sending anonymous (hah) letters to Tim Anderson, (who developed Lost Crag and Breakneck), making idle threats.
Climbers in Connecticut had to be a restraining order against Ken Nichols, who wrote the climbing guide for CT, because he too thought the rock was his, and kept chopping their bolts.
Is this what's needed here? Restraing orders?
As for Coopers bolts, should the idea be run by the state park first? Goodby good idea.
