Is is really illegal to tie certain knots?

So my buddy was telling me the other day that it is illegal to tie a noose that has 13 or more turns on it, is this really true? I have looked around on the internet and have come up with absolutely nothing. Actually, I take that back, one web site claims that 7 or 8 turns is just as effective as 13. I told my friend that its not that I think he is a liar, its just that I won't believe it until I have some legitimate proof. You know, not some web site put up by some schmuck that has information with no sources at all. If you could shed some light on this that would be great. If its not illegal to tie them, its not like I am going to go around all day tying nooses, becuase I am not psycho like that, I just want to get some information straight.

IF you tie a noose with more than 17 turns, it will explode and kill everyone within 20 feet.

SHHHH, don't tell anyone.

I can't believe that it is illegal to make them, but I have a memory itching at the back of my mind that it was 13 turns for a noose that was used to hang people.

From what I have heard back in the day when they legally hanged people there was some kinda law to regulate the numbers of turns in the noose.

Your friend is both right and wrong. In Oregon, where you are, there used to be a statute in the state Code. The law is no longer there because the need that caused state legislature to pass the law in the first place no longer exists. You see, back in the 1920's there was a lot of hanging going on in Orgeon and the Pacific Northwest in general. They hanged everyone; minorities, immigrants, felons, mimes, you name it. All that hanging caused a rope shortage. The rope production could not keep up with demand, as it took a lot longer to make a rope in those days than now. Anyway, there was a growing concern that one day there might not be enough rope to hang all the people that needed to be hanged. A great lobby was formed with numerous interested parties, and they convinced the Oregon state legislature to pass a law that not only limited the number of twists in the noose, but more importantly, the total length of rope that could be used to carry out said hanging. The first part of the law was not really needed, because most people generally used about 10 twists in the noose as it was. Only the paranoid and wasteful used more twists. It was the second part limiting the length that really had the impact. Everyone had to start using shorter trees as well. Anyway, today's rope production is able to keep up with the demands for hanging rope, so about 15 years ago, the legislature removed the law from the Code as part of an overal statutory cleanup. They also removed the provisions preventing farmers from sodomizing their livestock and the law forbidding the use of cat urine as a brass and copper cleaner. They realized that cat piss was a perfectly natural and safe way to clean pennies. Tell your friend that has is right and wrong.

Dumbass.

No, but I heard that it's illegal to tie a figure eight without a backup knot.

wjca, that was classic.
while the noose is not illegal, I'm pretty sure if you hang one out in your yard you'll get some interesting responses.

I almost forgot one important side note to my previous post. While it is now legal in Oregon to sodomize one's own livestock, it is still illegal to sodomize someone else's. Please keep this in mind, as I do not want anyone to get in trouble because I posted an incomplete response.

I decided to research this while putting off my homework for law school. I searched the U.S. Code and there isn't any federal statute against tying a noose. However, it is illegal to tie a noose and display it in an area in an effort to frighten or intimidate someone. This was common in the '60's during the civilrights movement and there have also been a few recent cases dealing with it, so tie them all you want, just don't threaten or intimidate anyone and you'll be fine.

....Why couldn't they have just simply re-used the rope?.... it's not like they're going to get cooties and die before they're hanged anyway....

....and it's obvious to anyone who has tried to tie a noose that it is impossible to get exactly 10, 13 or whatever amount of turns anyway.... when does a turn become a turn? Where does the turn start?

oh, and....

I hear in the states, as in most places, it's illegal to tie the knot if you're two homosexual individuals (consenting or not). Thus it really is illegal to tie certain knots.
