:?: Ok, I'm not sure if this one has been beat to death, but i'm wanting to by some cams. I see Mountain gear has Trango Flex cams on sale for $32.95. Has anybody tried these? I would rather purchase the new metolius range finders or aliens. Right now I can break for about a set of 3 or 4 depending on price. I've been climbing a year now and building my rack. Have u all noticed the jump in the price of these things in the last year. Like 50% increase. Should we all do a boycott and start forging our own, or pay these prices?

But what the hey: BOYCOTT ON! After I get my Metolious and Alien Cams though. You really ARE a rowdy burro, aren't ya!

Since cams do tend to add up in cost quick I would strongly encourage you to climb(lead) multiple times on a particule brand before buying them especially since your probably not going to be replacing them for awhile. I'm new here but I would bet there have been about 20 cam discussions already.....

The price increase mostly seems to be bd camelots and the like. The $32 price seems good, and that's why i'm asking if someone has tried the trangos. Ah! Heck. Maybe I'll spend my money on Mangoes instead of Trangos and mix it up with some tequilla, and have a real rock concert. Now I'm really gettin Rowdy!!!!

Right now I can break for about a set of 3 or 4 depending on price I have seen and played with the Trango flex cams and will say they are alright. They are quality built cams, though not as nice as the newer maxcams. They are also pretty light, though once again the newer maxcams are lighter. You might want to take a look at the DMM cams they are also going on sale due to a new improved version being released this year. Between the two I would perfer the DMM

There is a review of that generation of Trango FlexCams at http://climbing.com/equipment/cams212/. The review was posted from May 2002 so keep in mind that it does not compare to the current version of cams. I think there have been changes in the Camalots, Metolius cams (Raangefinder) and maybe the DMM since then. Mal

Metolius, Omega and Trango are also coming out with larger expansion cams. For some reason, it appears that metolius supercams will be @ 1-1/2 inches and larger, and not made in small sizes like the Trangos. You might want to wait for a bit, then get the best that you find. Which may not be what you are looking at currently. That way, you'll be both a well equipted and a happy Burro!  Of course, there may be Burro piss all over the floor when the RowdyBurro sees the $87 and $94.50 price tag for the Omegas. Maybe you can trade for the left Burro nut or your first born son or something creative. Take out a second mortage on the Burrobarn or something. I like the fact that Trango appears to have had these out and working in the field for quite some time. The Omega doesn't give me a warm fuzzy for some reason, yet they say that they test to 14kn. The range for the #1 Omegas is .83-2.10". http://www.trango.com/prod.php?id=113. http://www.rockclimbing.com/gear/product.php?p=3204&list=1 http://www.omegapac.com/op_products_linkcams.html Best suggestion is this: If you are going to go with old school cams anyway, may I suggest that the Burro wait and purchase all the perfect condition used ones which will be appearing online this spring as idiots like me spend the money to replace old school cams with new cam tools. Plan on the price dropping for used cams real soon. Regards: Bill

Well Folks, RowdyBurro took the leap and just bought the Metolius Range Finder set 5-8 for $199+tax. Should be here in about a week. So I'm going to Red Rock Rendevous in a couple of weeks and hope to try them out there. Looks like metolius cams have been around for some time and are pretty much industry standard. As money continues to trickle in I'll probably try some smaller cams by trango or aliens. Hey I appreciate the advice, humor and sattire.
