You know I have given this a lot of thought lately, really digging in deep to try and understand why it is that I climb. I think it is easiest during the winter months when you are forced away to some extent, from the regular climbing of spring, summer, and fall. I won't deny that currently I am going through a climbing "funk". I feel neither motivated to climb or do any climbing related activities (like post to this site). I will admit to browsing by on a fairly regular interval to look for local info/interests, but even a direct troll attempt at me the other day just failed to cause me to bite. If anything, that too me is a big sign of just how far from climbing I have drifted.

I have taken extended time off in the past (over a year) mostly due to injuries, and am beginning to wonder if this "funk" isn't injury induced as well since I separated my should in the not so distant past. But I also think it is more than that. I have two wonderful kids who are age 3 and 9 and I have been spending more and more time with them doing the things they love, as opposed to dragging them where I want to go and doing what I want to do. Many of you can probably see where this is going...

I have come to the realization that I was climbing for reasons entirely selfish, and in the wake of my addictive behavior I was losing time with my kids and my wife. Being a person with tendencies towards addictive behavior I can look back with a little regret and chagrin and see how much climb has ruled my life for the last 12 years. Yes it has given me alot, but it has also taken as well. In the end, even too much of a good thing can be destructive and climbing has and still does, contain a lions share of perfect examples of such. I haven't given up on climbing but it has been removed from its relative prominence in my life. It has been replaced with running and wrestling with my 3 year old, as well as homework and hiking with my daughter. I have passed over a day of climbing to spend it rescreening my front door, which has badly needed it for the past 3 years ( )and mowing the lawn.

Maybe I am truly "wandering off route" for the first time in many years, and I can not say I am sad because of it. Sometimes it is that break from the familiar and worn that leads to new discoveries and ignition of new interests that make life worth living. I'll be back climbing again shortly once the weather clears up, but I *hope* I remember the way I feel now in order to help maintain perspective on what is important.

It is what seperates us from the "others".

Have plenty of friends but not many who climb. I have found that my climbing friends are the ones who I really look foward to meeting up with when going out to crank. I've had some great laughs with them. I think it is the passion and the memories I have for climbing that keeps me going.
