My advice would be to spend some time walking along the BASE of a crag placing gear in cracks/features/whatever. Then have someone who knows their stuff from experience come along and check your placements and advise you. You will learn more in an hour doing this than reading 1000 posts to your question.

You cannot possibly expect to learn how to place gear from a web site forum without having at least tried placing the gear in rock. More than likely if you do as I have said you won't need to ask that question again.

But please, do not try and figure it out whilst climbing. Accidents do happen. Good luck and enjoy.

If this isnt a joke, here is an answer:

1. Ask someone to show you
2. Make sure the vast majority of the surface area of the piece is in contact with the surrounding rock, buried in a constriction that is NOT between bad rock (loose flake, small boulder, fracture lines, weak sandstone, weak granite, weak anything).

:D
