Looks like Zion may be clearing up for a little bit (jinx),
so we're heading out for the next couple of weeks to check it out.
We are curious about the flow of the Virgin R., more specifically, at what cfs does it become impractical or difficult to ford the river?
Any opinions?

We were there during this last spell of rain for a week. I forgot what the exact cfm flow was, but we had no problems crossing back and forth all week. The water temp was 36 degrees and made for some stinging toes once on the other side. Outside of that just pick a good spot to cross.

If you got a big pack, when crossing the river, be able to get out of it immediately. If you do go down, it won't take much to drown you. I undo waist belt and , definitely, chest strap
If you're really that concerned about the flow, you can connect to eachother with a static line. One person on land while the other one crosses.
Bring Teva's for the river so you don't soak your shoes in ice water.

In my experience you can cross it fairly easy (minus stinging toes in the spring)) at the right spot but it can change quickly if it rains. Once after a rain we had to wait a couple of hours on the other side for it to subside.
Also, you can usually find a nice stick to use as a crutch which makes things more stable.
And, you can call the backcountry office and they have water temperature and cfs information and might be able to give you some beta about river conditions.
