Phoenix is cancelled this year. Governor Stable is Mar 19. http://www.paclimbers.org/...ion=page&pageID=2767 What other events are planned for 2005?? All too often, events get posted a week before they occur, which doesn't give anyone time to plan to get there.

umm, the only problem I see with outdoor comps, is the possibility of someone already having worked a very difficult problem at the location of the comp. giving them an unfair advantage aginst someone never climbing there before..

yah, well the way comps are run over here in the west coast.. are competitors are not allowed to see the route/problem untill the comp, and in nation events, they are only allowed 5 minuets to complete a climb from the first second they see the route.. this gives everyone a level playing field ; no one has prior knowledge of climbs say I'm a v5 climber, but I've worked a v7 for 3 months and can finally send it.. if another climber comes from another area(at the same level of climbing), he did not have 3 months prior to work the v7 and be able to send it in the comp, even though the out of area climber is at the same skill level, he will only be able to send the v5's...

Most outdoor comps have local and non-local divisions to help remedy the problem dicussed above. Not a perfect system but it does help.

In reply to: In reply to: uh what is a soccer-mom indoor comp? think like soccer, except the kids wear madrocks instead of cleats. the soccer moms need to come in and watch their little kiddies climb, meanwhile turning caves and corridors into total clusterf-cks. its quite annoying. the nerve of those moms wanting to watch their kids climb. hmph. i bet the dads know better huh?

In reply to: the nerve of those moms wanting to watch their kids climb. hmph. i bet the dads know better huh? oh man, there was a dad at an ABS comp this past saturday that i wanted to tell off so badly. i know that no one, except maybe Child Services, can tell a parent how to raise thier child so i restrained myself (i'm pretty sure he wouldn't have been receptive) but man, did he piss me off. dialogue #1: {dad to daughter}: why are you on that problem? do that one instead. {daughter to dad}: but i can't do that one. i want to do this one. {dad to daughter}: it's not worth the points, stop wasting my time. dialogue #2: (as i was patiently waiting to start a problem that crossed paths) {dad to son}: hurry up and get on, he's (me) waiting for you. (boy gets on, makes a move off the start hold, loses feet, and falls off) {dad to son}: why do you keep screwing up like that? (boy moves to get back on) {dad to son}: no, you screwed up and lost your turn. it's his turn now. dialogue #3: (as the girl was a few moves off the start) {dad to daughter}: no, don't use that foot. use that one. {daughter to dad}: what? {dad to daughter}: move your foot to the other hold. (girl tries. girl falls) {dad to daughter}: see? you should've used the foot i told you to. {daughter to dad}: but dad, mine was working. i almost had it. {dad to daughter}: fine. then get back on and prove me wrong. and from appearances (which i know can be deceiving) i don't think the dad has ever climbed, if he was ever athletic.

I hate indoor comps. Soccer moms giving advice when they have never had a pair of shoes on is a big pet peeve of mine, but even worse with indoor comps is the chalk!!! The gyms have this hazy look because of all the chalk dust, the holds are caked, people are chalked all the way to their elbow (I guess for the arm-bars that the gyms has  ). Any more I go to Governers Stable and the Triple Crown. Both are great events that raise money for even greater causes . . . Access.

i've been to several indoor comps, and find that most parents are very cool. there are the few overzealous ones, but to characterize them all as soccer parents is unfair. most comps have a great vibe, with kids and parents encouraging all of the climbers, not just the ones they know. it's unfair to slander indoor comps because of a very few bad apples.

With the popularity of indoor comps, I wonder why my "marathon on a treadmill" idea hasn't taken hold yet...

In reply to: With the popularity of indoor comps, I wonder why my "marathon on a treadmill" idea hasn't taken hold yet... the treadmill might die. To be fair, indoor comps are usually great experiences for the kids. I used to do USA Climbing (former USCCA) comps and went to junior nationals two years in a row. the kids really do get a lot out of it. Outdoor comps always have better parties though! Governor Stables here I come. That New River Rendevouz does sound pretty sweet too. MILF? I just called her baby. mmm
