I'm going skiing for the weekend at Cascade with some friends and on our way back home to Illinois we were considering stopping at a gym to get a little climbing in. (For a change from our usual gym). I found three gyms, one in Madison, one in Milwaukee, and one about halfway between. So, which one is the best? Or you can give me pros and cons of each.

Boulders is the Madison one. (great gym, good bouldering) the Milwaukee one is Adventure rock ( Nice gym, high walls and good bouldering) Both gyms are about the same price, but i would suggest boulders in madison

If we had gone this weekend, climbing outdoors would have been and option. :)

I am assuming that the third one you are talking about is Vertical Stronghold in Appleton. I work at that gym, and i have climbed at Adventure Rock. Haven't gotten to Boulders yet. If i had to pick between vert and A-rock at the moment i would suggest A-rock. The main reason for this is that A-Rock had a competition not too long ago with some pretty sick routes. I am sure quite a few of them are still up. Another concern is that chalk is not allowed at vertical stronghold. Don't get me wrong, I love my gym, i just would like to get on some of the routes from that comp, and i prefer chalk to the eco-ball that we use at vertical stronghold. I have heard only great things about boulders, so i plan to get there soon. There is a comp there on the 27th that i am thinking of entering...

One last quick question, for either Boulders or AV, is their any issue with getting belay certified? I am assuming I just ask one of the employees to watch us and give us the ok. I have not climbed at any other gyms, so I don't know how they work.

If you come up to the front desk at boulders we can have you get belay cert through us. If you know how to tie a figure 8 knot, work an ATC and everything then you need one other person and you need to do a 10min test so then we Know you can belay in our gym. doesnt cost anything uless you dont know what an ATC is.... if you have any questions let me know.

I have been to all three gyms, and i would second the rev- A-Rock is the place to go. THe routes that went up at the comp are amazing. I cant wait to get back there to play on them.
Getting belay checked is quick and easy.
To me the difference between the gyms is routes or boulder problems.
here's my quick opinion of the pro's:
BOULDERS
--sweet problems
-- awesome freestanding boulder
-- juggy lead routes (25' ish)
-- decent toprope routes
A-ROCK
--- sick routes (lead and top) (this is the draw for me... the routes are great) (35' topouts)
--- awesome crack climb
--- good bouldering

Well, I ended up going to A-rock on Sunday. I was there from 2-6pm. The gym is very nice, people were nice, and the routes were great. (They need better water though) I went with a couple friends including a first time climber. He had a great time, he is already asking if I am going climbing again anytime soon.

Yo Rachel what hell is up with the water, when i was at the Comp it smelled like a truck full of poop spilled in the hallway and yes Quickclips you are right the water taste like crap... And who wants to spend $1 on a bottle of water.
Best thing you can do is bring your own water.
