for thosee of us that like to get their knot untied after tehy whipp and choose nt to tie in woith the figure of eight follow through, which is a better knot? i learned to to tie and have tied in all my life with a double bowline, however recently ive known some people and heard some buzz aobut the bowline follow through. so i was wondering which is the better knot? or is it just a matter of preferance?

My old climbing partner used the retraced bowline for tie in. He claimed it was easier to untie after whipping. I just stick with the good old figure 8 follow thru. Not to hijack your thread, I think that it is also important to always finish a knot without stopping once you have started. A friend of mine started a figure 8 follow thru, got distracted before doing the follow thru part & wound up climbing to the anchors on a hard route with just 3' of cord feed thru his harness. Fortunately he noticed this at the anchors before being lowered.

Prepare yourself. 50 replies follow on why you'll be killed instantly if you tie in with anything other than the 8.

one time i was climbing with this guy, Jim, and he started to tie in with an overhand and all of a sudden this big hairy guy walked up and shot him....before Jim even got the change to touch the rock!

how about this:

sticking with the bowline (forget for the moment that the figure-8 exists), are there any differences in safety between:
- double bowline w/ fisherman's backup (fisherman tied on the loop formed)
- double bowline w/ fisherman's backup (follow tail back up and backup knot above the bowline)
- double bowline with bowline backup
- retraced bowline

I guess no one is smart here
double retraced bowline, 140% stronger than a figure 8 with 70 less damage to the rope.

You will be instantly killed if you know that statistic and use it to your advantage.
