I'm certain this has been discussed (probably at length) but I just was wondering what sort of soap you use to clean your rope... I've heard different things and I'm trying to get some good ideas on how to prolong the life of my old one and start out right with a new one...

Although it's on the expensive side ($2.00 per use) I have had great results with Sterling's Wicked Good Rope Wash.

I've found that water alone will take out most of the grime from the rope. I would say try that first, and then move on to the soap if it still needs it.

Commercial front loader washer, large size so rope has room to flop around. Place on Gentle cycle.

No soap, the water alone gets all the grit out.

Any soap that is marked gentle for delicate fabrics is going to be ok. Woolite is a safe bet if you are worried.

If you are going to go to the trouble of washing your rope, a little bit of soap will make the effort more worthwhile.

same here. i just throw it in the machine (on the gentle cycle) with no soap at all and it works great.

lately I have been aid climbing with soap on a rope. With it I sling horns, step in the loop, lasso granite chicken heads...even make my second wash his/her hands with it at each belay station...

From the BlueWater web site:

Keep your rope clean Dirt can shorten the life of your rope by increasing internal and external abrasion. It is a good idea to occasionally wash a rope to remove dirt and rock crystals. Put the rope in a pillow case or washing bag and use a front loading machine with cold water only to prevent shrinkage. It is acceptable to use a mild soap to remove oil or grease but avoid harsh detergents. DO NOT USE BLEACH OR BLEACH SUBSTITUTES. Make sure to rinse thoroughly. Small amounts of fabric softener may be used to give better flexibility and a softer hand as a rope stiffens with use. Your rope should be air dried away from direct sunlight. It will not harm a rope to store it wet. Nylon is not affected by water and will not rot or mildew.

thanks for all the input... sounds odd that storing a rope wet wouldn't do anything to it...
does it have to be a front loader? to avoid tangles? abrasions?
