i'd like to begin in alpine/ice/mountaineering. i'm a bit daunted by the cost of equipment among other things. i do live in boulder, co; so i'll be honest to say that's an unbeatable resource. what courses (if any) should i take? perhaps (i like this idea -save me $), i can wrangle some alpine guru into taking me under his/her wing. anyone in boulder up to the task? i have reasonable traditional rock experience

Check some local community colleges- I live in Seattle and I found that a nearby community college (Olympic College for anyone who is interested) that offered a basic mountaineering course. I had the benifit of being a class that provided some techincal gear (ice axe, helmet, rope) so the cost was reduced that way. I actually took it when I was still in high school and I signed up for a program called running start where my high school would pay for the cost of the class (except gear) and I would get PE credit towards my graduation requirements. Not such a bad deal. Other than that check local gyms and/ or ask around.

Go to Neptune Mountaineering(you might have heard of them  ) they can hook you up with classes and gear rental.

i could also use some advice on finding a suitable mountain boot. i need an around performer on any alpine enviroment to be found here in colorado. mainly day-trips on moderate ice and mixed, but all around mountaineering of sorts as well.

If they fit you, La Sportiva Makalu is your boot, maybe the most all-round boot around...

i'm a big fan of la sportiva. problem is i tend to be unable to wear them cuz they run small and my feet are very large. i'll simply go to neptune and try on everything they have. yes, i've heard of the makalu. they seeme excellent

In reply to: i'll simply go to neptune and try on everything they have seems like you've answered your question. the boots that work the best are the ones that fit the best, IMO. try on as many different pairs of "all rounders" as you can you hands on and go for the ones that fit the best.
