I am looking to introduce some friends to climbing. They are from the Chattanooga area, and I am coming home for spring break. Does anyone know of some good toproping areas in the area. I have sport gear, but would prefer to toprope for instruction.

Thanks for any help you guys (and girls) can offer.

Sunset. Due to the cliff's height, I think most routes require a belay from the top.

Take em to fosters. You can sport lead your way to the top and set up the TR for your pals.

Fosters is user friendly for beginners.

If you cant lead yet-or want toprope particularly:

go to rock town- there are lots of top rope setups there. Bring webbing for the rigging. Rock town is very scenic as well- You can probably run a few bouldering problems. We have always had a ball just scrambling and exploring.

Stone Door at savage gulf- top roping and "sport" rappelling-which many beginners enjoy and is within their scope. At the bottom of the stair routes on both the left and the right.

Really crappy top rope climbing at eagles nest on look out mtn- great beginners rappelling there.

Be careful trying to toprope at sunset- the ranger is most particular (for good reason!) on safety and tree damage. I really wouldnt recommend sunset for beginners.

Be safe and have fun!

Hey, I am looking to climb this week too (23,24,25)! My house mate has been climbing for years! He knows all the good routes in the surrounding area. I will ask him and post it here within the next couple days.

Cheers

I would suggest Fosters, Obed or Black Mtn...

Fosters- Isn't my number one choice, but it does have some awesome climbs..

Obed- awesome climbing, pretty easy routes, sport and trad but you can lead and set up toprope for your friends, plenty of places to climb, and is just awesome...

Black Mtn.- this is a GREAT place for begginners... I first learned to climb here.... there is only a few climbs that are bolted... the rest you just have to set up for top rope around big rock formations and trees... it has some of the easiest climbs ever and some great bouldering... PM me for me details, and have fun whereever you decided to go..

peace

Sunset has a good number of routes that are easy to set up top rope. There are bolts that are easily accesable from the top and then you can walk down and get started. Parking is the only issue I can think of that makes sunset a problem
There's the 5.6 climb "one-ten" and "More fun w/ dick and jane" that's a 9. Also there's the 5.8 "s'more" in a corner right next to "Flagstone". If you can climb 5.10 up then there's a ton of good toproping in this area. Scream wall is an excellent 5.10 route.
