Anyone else besides me worried that many of the easy classics are going to be replaced by thousands of steel rungs and cables?

Not really, I read the article and this is not likely to happen on public lands. Hopefully they will pick some unattractive choss pile to do it on. Also, they would have to own the crag. I dont see the Mohonk preserve allowing something like this on their property. Wait, maybe the Mountain House will put one in at Skytop for their guests.....not.

There is a fun via ferrata there, along with trad and sport climbing.

Can't speak for everyone, but I'm not worried. Why would anyone put a via ferrata up on an easy route that any joker can climb free? The real place for ladders and fixed cables is clearly on the featureless walls that almost nobody climbs. That would open them up for more people to enjoy these natural scenic resources.

Picture this: You are in moderate normal physical condition. You've always wanted to rock climb, but believed you lacked the upper body strength to get up where "the real climbers go". You arrive at the climbing site, and after a brief training session, you put on your harness and begin to climb the metal steps. Suddenly, you are out there, alone, halfway up an overhang, tethered to a well constructed safety system, in the middle of a 200 foot cliff. You are up where the "real climbers go". This is sport climbing. This is Via Ferrata!

Funny, I've always pictured myself in better physical condition. Looking at the current demographic of obesity in america, I would shudder to think what their definition of "normal" might be.

where the "real climbers go". - they might want to rethink this one.
This is sport climbing. -At least they got this part right!
