For me and my mates, It Depends (Tm)... The classic go-for-it attitude (perfected and named by my betters) is a rope, a rack and the shirts on our backs. I statrt adding stuff depending upon length of route, expected weather, altitude, conditions, etc. I avoid toting a pack up a climb as much as human possible. Unless the climbing is so difficult, I generally like it when each climber totes their own possessions. I've used a 'drop and drag' butt bag... double length sling preattached to the harness on one end and the butt bag on the other, so when I get to a chimney I just unbuckle and let it hang below my feet. Also prevents from losing the load it the buckle breaks or something. In that butt bag might be: water, wind shirt, food, fine combustibles, a spare lighter for bivis, Rarely do I take more than ibuprophen and tape for first aid, even on extended trips. I wouldn't bother with space blankets et al unless very specific conditions/objective risks suggest. Light is right. Put your kit together, heft it and then subtract anything *you think* you can do with out. Lastly, sometimes the lead climbing is such that the leader really shouldn't be hauling their own gear... we use a pack or do without in those circumstances. Grade III and under? I tape a water bottle and maybe shove a candy bar in a pocket, clip the descent shoes to the back of the harness, maybe a wadded up wind breaker if its threatening. Traveling light is a joy. Cheers DMT
