Try listening to Enya, Andrea Bocelli and Leo Kottke. Also wearing an Andrea Bocelli t-shirt with Prana pants while climbing will serve you well. 8^) Curt

Climbing and skateboarding are really not comparable in that sence. Climbing isn't about being a climber, it's about getting to the top, and doing better than you've done before. Climbers don't care about what you wear, how you talk, etc. Skateboarding on the other hand...have you ever seen someone dressed in an acceptable business manner and speaking proper english? I see climbers like that all the time. If you want everyone to know your a climber, your are focusing on the wrong thing. BUT, not meaning to flame you, blurr makes some nice jeans for climbing in, flexable and free fitting. I also like some of prana's shirts.

At some places it can = the all MEC catalogue look. Where do these people get the money??? Cragging in a $700 Arc'teryx shell. Unbelievable. The only thing I'd say can be part of the climbing look is the climbing toque. How many times has it been roasting hot, clothes are being shed....yet the toque remains. It must have some sort of bandana function I'm missing. Mmmmm sweaty toque.

It really depends on wether you are a trad climber, a sport climber, or a boulderer. and dont even get me started on alpine fashion! If you plan on sticking with trad: get some old worn out fleece underpants or lose cotten shorts. you can alternate between these depending on wether it is warm or cool. as for the top, either a blank T-shirt or a patagonia jacket from the 80's will do. now if you plan on sport climbing: stretch pants or lycra will do to keep your tush warm and the weight down when sending hard grades. no shirt is an option but you can also wear a T-shirt with your sponsers (or just tell people it's your sponcer) name on it. bouldering has a very strick dress code. you gotta wear capris (prana of cource) and a shirt is highly frowned opon. you will need a shirt for the walk to and from the boulders and this must be a pusher T-shirt. A bienie is also an optional accesory. it should either match your chalk bag or have a pom-pom on top. this will give you the basic guide lines, but it will take you years of experience to pick the perfect clothes every time you head out the door for the crags. best of luck mate

Style of dress and music? I am about to head out the door to climb. I am wearing a dark blue UQAM sweatshirt, and torn levi 505's, relaxed fit. As it is in the 40's here, I will accessorize with a pair of worn out Addidas Supernova's and an old black Patagonia jacket. At the crag I will slip on my BD Momentum AL harness and my La Sportiva Miura's before I whine and hangdog my way up the 11's that I hope to someday redpoint. ( At 49 years of age, someday better come soon.) Oh yeah, and I will be hanging from a cheap Edelweiss rope in between working the moves. My 17 year old son will be making fun of the fact that he has a longer reach and is stronger than I am. In the car to the crag I will either listen to some Neil Young, The Band or some Rolling Stones... unless my son prevails and we end up listening to something I can't identify. I know you didn't ask about food, but thats part of the look too. I have some raisins, PB and J sandwiches and some water in a Nalgene bottle. Hope this helps you get your climbing look together.

I am going trad climbing today and this is my costume... Pants: Soft shell back pants. Purchased third hand on ebay for $30. Retails for $120 (according to the Polish ebay seller). Manufacturer unknown. Held together with duct-tape and shoe goo, but these modifications cannot been seen when pictures are taken with our disposable camera purchased at the BP station. Shirt: Yellow spandex/nylon shirt. Purchased for $9.99 at Wal-mart. The Starter shirt looks like the $60.00 Underarmor shirt from a distance. I do not wash the shirt because I suspect it will melt with hot water and detergent. Vest: Light red fleece. Purchased at REI for $25.00. Was in an REI sale bin in the childrens section. I tore off the tage and then negotiated with the manager for the reduced price (this actually works). Told him it was for my kid. Sucker. So what I can barely fit into it, it makes me look huge (or ridiculous). Some say it was pink, but after years of exposure and dirt I say it is light red. Also, I left the little REI logo on since it is cool and tells people I am a serious trad/alpinist climber. Not as cool as North Face or Patagucci, but at least it does not say Walmart, Target, or even Shell Gas Station on it, like my poly-pro sweatshirt does. Of course, it is warm enough today I don't need to wear that $6.00 sweatshirt. Why do I wear this specific stuff? Because in all the mags, this is what most of the trad/alpinist seem to wear. Of course, their shit is real. When I can climb some sick run-out 5.12x at 12,000 feet, then I'll wear the fashionable $1500 climbing clothes too. I'll let you know what I wear for bouldering and sport climbing. As for my rack? Four cams. #2 camalot, found at the base of...

The bouldering scene does actually mirror the skate scene in a lot of ways. Hoodies, toques, skate shoes.

I call BS. There are absolute moron climbers everywhere and there are plenty of intelligent and extremely talented skaters out there. I'm talking about people who actually skate or climb, not just moron poseurs at the mall. When I'm out at the blocs I tend to wear a toque, my Halcyon Climbing hoodie, prAna pants, and 5.10 mountain masters... which look a lot like the skate shoes I wear the rest of the time.

my style changes with the selection at the local thrift stores. when i buy something new i buy my shorts and shirts from target or wallmart (the great satan!). i can find the same stuff there for 25% of the price of something with a fancy name on it at a REI. I listen to Tom Waits, slide guitar, and Monkeygrinder (www.comejointhecircus.com)

As far as I'm concerned, the "climber" look is that of the old dude (or dudette) who looks like he's weathered so many climbing experiences that the toils of everyday life have become insignificant. Old ragged clothes, swollen and battered hands, and the thousand-yard-stare that is only otherwise known for men who've spent time on the front lines of military combat. Kinda like this... http://www.rockclimbing.com/...mp.cgi?Detailed=2038

Go for practicality, not marketability. Climbers should focus on their love of the sport and not how they are viewed by others. then again, a good old scrotum peircing is never frowned upon... javascript:emoticon('')
