There are a lot of heroes. It's hard to choose one. Mythology defines heroes a way we don't even acknowledge, because a hero to us is totally something different. A hero is someone we respect, and I have many heroes, including a lot of the ones mentioned in this forum.

I have more than one hero, i mean theres just too many great old men and keyboard junkies on RC.com that earn my respect. I mean, how many middle aged and older keyboard addicts inhabit rockclimbing.com and cite their seemingly impressive yet meager climbing career while making a 1000+ posts all while asserting their superiority over the gym newby who has a meager 10 posts. I SALUTE THESE BRAVE SOULS!!

Climber: Layton Kor because he actually had a tough constuction job while he was putting up a bunch of FA's during the 60's. He would work a full week, go do a committed route and be back on the job Monday morning. Royal is up there too because he was in the military then he went on to setting the standard as a climber.

Football: Pat Tillman: not only did he play well but he died for freedom.

Scientist: Richard Feynman worked on the Manhattan Project and determined that the space shuttle exploded in 1986 due to faulty 'O-rings'. Received the Nobel for QED as well.

President: Tied between John Adams and Harry Truman because those two guys did what was right and just, but not necessarily what was considered contemporarily popular.

Climbing: Rob Hall. Anyone who can spend the night on Everest like he did & survive the night.... After I heard about Mr. Hall I've never again said the words, "I'm cold."

The Men of the 160th SOAR & guys like Schugart & Gordon. Those are the quiet professionals who keep us safe from things we'll never know. To them I'm eternally grateful.

Jim Lovell. Come on, the guy was on the first mission to the moon & dare I even mention Apollo 13?

I could continue, but these guys are on the top of my list.

Overall climbing hero: Alex Lowe, one tough mofo! Amazing all round climber, activist for more good thing in the world than I could name right now, balls of solid rock (just look at some of the stuff he climbed, that whole rescue deal in Alaska and carrying that guy down,... The list is long.

Hero I have climbed with on a regular basis: Mike Thomas, for being the toughest, luckiest, most stuborn man alive. A lesser man would have given up when injured in a slide the way he was. Mike, my hat goes off to you!

so many climbers are out there who i look to for inspiration and just admire in general. a couple who stand out for me:

Croft, Potter, Robbins, and Herbst.

Then theres the pair of climbers who I've met in the last year who have both pushed and inspired me to become a better climber in so many different ways. Thanks Larry and Kate, you guys are the best!

Yeah, he got totally nailed on his last ascent though. Apparently the crux was a killer!
Tried to make a comeback, then just disappeared off the face of the Earth.

one of my heroes is my good friend Dana. he started out as a ski racer, then became a moutain biker, then raced road bikes professionally in Europe, and finally found climbing. he is one of the most graceful and gifted athletes that i have ever seen and he is one of the most driven, yet humble people. he never talks about his FAs or his epic climbs, unless pressed, and he is always willing to take me out and teach me. i have an incredible amount of respect for him as a human and as an alpinist.

Anatoli Boukreev... he did some amazing things in his relatively short life, and was a true hero in every sense of the word.. read "above the clouds" and "the climb" to understand why
