finally got out yesterday and got some shots at my local choss heap.

here are two, one i took of paul, and one that i set up and had paul shoot of me (which i actually like better). i know the scans are shitty, i'm more interested in notes on composition and color etc. be gentle, i'm a green horned noob.

I really like the first one! the left hand is the part the says a thousand words. the best part of climbing to capture is the unatural difficulty. it's also the hardest part to capture becuase no one hangs out on the hard moves and tiny holds.
it would be better if the strong line of the rock he's on, and the background wasn't right in the middle. try putting it one third from the top or bottom depending on what kind of effect you want.
I like the seccond one as well. I don't have any suggestions for it.
Good job!

color etc.

bad scan has killed the colors.. Color correction IS and SHOULD be a part of scanning process. And I would not eat doritos while you are scanning the pictures

check this
I would scan at least twice the recolution i am going to use, scale down and sharpen (check this too)

Too harsh lighting. To static compositions. Let some space for the viewers eye to move and direct it to your talent/focus point etc....
