Niether. I don't think that climbing is an extreme sport; free soloing maybe, but the rest of it is all perfectly safe and controlled. Extreme is more of a silly label to me. Makes me think of modified shovel racing and BASE jumping off ferris wheels while drinking a mountain dew.

Hmmm...interesting choice in names... Bouldering sport routes...now that is extreme (extremely stupid in my book). Blah...I don't like this thread. Climbing is just fun. I get as much excitement from cranking a cool boulder problem, as I do sending some killer sport route. You dig?

Currently I would say that more people are getting into bouldering than sport. I think there are a couple of reasons for it. One, it gives you tons of strength both mentally and physically. And two, it is cheaper and easier to get into. No harness, rope, pro, or draws to buy. And I think lots of people are more at ease with bouldering because there is not too much to learn how to work with. No need to learn to set pro, anchors, or even how to belay. I personally like to boulder more than a lot of people I know. I am also kinda lazy, so the thought of putting on a harness, tying a knot, placing and clipping draws is all more than I like to do. Now, two years ago, I was on rope all the time.

I like sport climbing. Maybe it is because I'm superficially satisfied, but the adreneline gets pumping more for me when I'm fifty feet up (regardless of the fact that I'm roped in). Okay, it may not be as much of a muscular workout or whatever, but being high is fun. Uhhh, I mean high as in distance from the ground; no more Sharma references (you know what I mean).

I enjoy Sport Climbing before Bouldering, but Trad above all. There is nothing like the beautiful views you can get while climbing a long route.

Ok, I just reread my post to this and it didn't make any sense! For those of you that think I am a moron, the original post read "Which do you think is more extreme, bouldering or sport" and has since been edited. So I'm not losing it! I swear I'm not!

Yes, the individual who started this thread has a history of changing his titles and posts a few days after posting them. Did it to me a few times to try and make me seem like an asshole. Didn't work. Haven't seen that person around lately....

somehow i find bouldering more productive or maybe i just like the intense concentration being put into it, plus it forces me into the techniques while going for the burn

It would apper that the original post has been edited to remove something said that was stupid ??? As to the question, "What's your favorite, boulder or sport ???" That's easy, Trad !!! To me it's all climbing, I do all three, and even 'builder' a bit. But I like trad the best. It's quickly becoming a lost art. rrrADAM

Actually, I love them equally, but use them for different purposes. Sport is my first love and there's nothing like red-pointing a climb you've worked for a long time, having put your blood, sweat and tears into. Bouldering is, for me, a training tool (and more). I primarily use it (at least say I do) for training technique and sometimes endurance with long traverses. However, the "real" love of it is the solitude; the chance to work alone, jam some tunes and reflect on life and whatever's bothering me. While I say I'm working on my physical prowess, I'm actually working on my mental acuity more. Mick

Trad is not becoming a lost art. And if it does, well that leaves the rock open for me. Well I would have to say sport. I do both but find sport a little better. More intense.

I don't think I could honestly say that I like one more than the other, but I must say, bouldering is really, really fun! I boulder more that I sport climb, though this does not necessarily I like one more than the other. Bouldering is a lot cheaper, and I think that more and more full fledged climbers, and beginner climbers are starting to realise that. I'm exactly like pianomahnn though, I get the same adrenaline rush I do from a rad boulder problem as I do a really hard sport route.

I like both, as I get older and notice that I'm losing strength, bouldering has helped me maintain some of it (imagine an old geezer, losing his teeth saying that) ) That being said, as safe as sport is, "IF" you are doing your job, I still get a rush out of being up high, something creepy and wonderful about it, like I'm doing something that the vast majority of the population wouldn't consider "fun". Maybe I just feel slightly superior than the average Joe by being brave, wink, wink, nudge nudge I can't believe how stupid I am sometimes when I re-read my message before posting. BUT STILL POST IT ANYWAY!!!!!! Jeff

With bouldering you can do the crux of a 5.11-5.12 route without going through all the crap that you would if you were sport climbing.

i do prefer sport, the satisfaction i get it at lest twice that of bouldering, and i think that is because the wall is twice as high.

I'd have to agree with Adam on this... TRAD is the best. There's something to be said when you're climbing with a full rack, you find a good crack and look down and decide between nuts, cams, or hexs. Which will work best? Trying to judge the size. And get the piece in there so you can resume climbing. Don't get me wrong sport is great on those face climbs where all you have for pro is bolts. But to me Trad is more fun.

I prefer bouldering. It's just you and the rock, nothing else. No gear or belayer to blame your lack of skill on.

Is it just me or are there a number of factions that have emerged as of late in the rockclimbing community. So called "sport climbers", "boulderers", and "trad climbers" are pitted against one another in Bulletins, Forums, Campgrounds and Rock Faces the world over. I for one am tired of it. If I ever hear someone ask which of these disciplines is better I'm going to puke. Rockclimbing is not condensable to any 1 of 3 particular styles or methods. Look at all the s**t going down in the middle east because people have enjoyed stroking their individuality and egos to the point of narrow-minded arrogance - ultimately leading us all into war. Have we learned nothing from going out into nature, with our best friends, or in solitude and spending time personally challenging our strength, fear and other limits? When we as climbers all share in the "what it is" of rock climbing that makes us feel great, how is it that people can come away feeling separated from nature, themselves or others? How is it that SCENES emerge? There is just one scene...the rockclimbing scene. "To the ordinary person, others require tolerance. To the highly evolved being others do not requre tolerance, because there is no such thing as other." LaoTzu

ITS OBVIOUS to ME WHICH IS BETTER: ICE CLIMBING. You don't hafta wait for routes, the routes CHANGE DAILY, and you get to carry these COOL SHARP TOOLS which makes it so that nobody F*%ks with you. BUT, if i HAD to make a choice between SPROt Climburzz and Boulderers, I'd cook the SPROT climburz first, cause thay have less fast twitch muscle, and I don't like white meat, except PORK.
